Kia ora to our dads, brothers, sons, grandads, mentors, and mates...when was the last time you gave yourself a Warrant of Fitness?

We’re pretty good at servicing the vehicle, checking the tyres, and making sure it's ready for the road. But how often do we stop and check in on ourselves?

Men’s Health Week is a reminder that your health deserves the same attention, looking after yourself isn't something to put off until later.

Too many Kiwi men ignore warning signs, push through discomfort, or tell themselves they'll get around to it someday. This week is about taking a moment to check under the bonnet — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

! Book that health check you've been meaning to get
! Check in with a mate and ask how he's really doing
! Make time for the things that keep you healthy and well

Looking after your health isn't a sign of weakness — it's one of the smartest investments you can make for yourself, your whānau, and the people who count on you.

Have you ever booked with a Nurse Practitioner before?

These days, visiting your GP clinic often involves more than just seeing a doctor — healthcare is a real team effort, and Nurse Practitioners are an important part of that team

Nurse Practitioners have been part of healthcare in New Zealand for the past 25 years, with more than 1,000 now working across the country in a wide range of health settings.

Many people still aren’t quite sure what a Nurse Practitioner does. Well for starters, they are a highly qualified registered nurse with advanced university training who can assess, diagnose, treat, prescribe medications, order tests, and manage many health conditions independently.

They work alongside their medical colleagues and other healthcare professionals with the shared goal of providing the best possible care for their community.

So!..We are pleased to introduce and welcome Davina — Nurse Practitioner — to our team at Tamatea Medical Centre

Davina brings an incredible depth of knowledge and experience to our community, having worked as a nurse in Hawke’s Bay for the past 40 years and as a Nurse Practitioner for the last three.

She offers extensive expertise across primary care and mental health, with special interests in long-term conditions, sexual health, and women’s health and very importantly, provides compassionate, person-centred care for people of all ages — from tamariki (children) and rangatahi (youth) through to adults and kaumātua (our respected elders).

Her combination of experience, advanced clinical training, and genuinely approachable care will help patients to feel comfortable and supported.

We’re excited for you and our community to get to know her.

You may have not heard but there are some changes happening in the way diabetes and prediabetes is diagnosed.

From the 1st of July 2026 these changes will align the diagnosis criteria with the rest of the world.

https://www.diabetes.org.nz and .nz have some amazing resources and we would recommend checking out if you have any questions about diabetes topics.

This post breaks down what the current criteria is for being diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes and what is changing.

From 1 July 2026
Diabetes is now diagnosed at (blood test) HbA1c ≥ 48 mmol/mol (it was previously 50 mmols)

✅ Updated prediabetes range
• Prediabetes is now 42–47 mmol/mol (previously 41–49 mmols)

✅ New categories
• No diabetes: < 42 mmol/mol
• Prediabetes: 42–47 mmol/mol
• Diabetes: ≥ 48 mmol/mol

👉 Some people may now be diagnosed earlier, while others may no longer be classified as prediabetic.

Why this change matters
• It aligns with international best practice (World Health Organisation)
• Helps detect diabetes earlier
• Supports better long-term health outcomes
• Reduces risk of complications like heart disease, kidney disease, and eye problems.

What this means for you and your whānau?
*Earlier diagnosis = more time and support to stay well
*Lifestyle changes are often the first step (healthy eating, activity, weight support)
*Medication may be discussed, but not always needed right away
*Some people previously labelled “prediabetic” may no longer need regular testing.

What to do next.......
**No action needed unless your GP or nurse contacts you but if you do have questions or if you have risk factors or a whānau history, consider talking with us.

Today, we celebrate and thank our incredible GPs at Tamatea Medical Centre who provide compassionate, trusted care to our community every day.

Its World Family Doctor Day today and
this year’s theme, *“Compassionate care in a digital world,”* is a good reminder that while technology and AI continue to support modern healthcare, nothing can replace the value of a trusted family doctor who knows you, listens to you, and cares for you over your lifetime.

A very big thank you to all of our doctors (and those around the world) for the compassion, commitment, and continuity of care you bring to our community each and every day.
