The Speak It Up team is saddened to learned Nigel Latta’s passing this Tuesday after his courageous battle with stomach cancer. Nigel was not just a remarkable individual; he was a beacon of hope and inspiration to many through his work with televison, public speaking and the various books he published especially regarding parenting and mental health. During his time with our student social enterprise in 2022, he played a pivotal role in supporting our Mental Health event. We will remember his kindness and empathy towards us, as we were simply students from Nelson College trying to run a large scale event. His heartfelt discussions and insights truly resonated with everyone in attendance, teaching us invaluable lessons about how parents can communicate effectively with their children about mental health.

His warmth, passion, and dedication to making a difference will be profoundly missed. Nigel had an incredible ability to connect with people, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

At the end of last term, Y13 students, Austin Candlish, Jack Frankin and Ollie Martin put on an amazing event, all in aid of raising awareness and encouraging conversations for mental health. The event was for their Business Studies enterprise, Speak It Up, using the Young Enterprise Trust. Speak It Up is a not-for-profit enterprise, looking for ways to benefit the local community.
And so, they invited Nigel Latta to speak, and after a lot of planning, perseverance and drive, they had a fantastic turnout with 250 attendees. For the event to run, the boys had to raise over $5,000, reaching out to many local businesses for sponsorship.
The evening ran smoothly (with Mr Kramer coming to the rescue to sort out some sound issues). Nigel Latta was an incredible guest speaker, providing informative and thoughtful insights surrounding mental health, all with a good sense of humour, providing some laughs along the way, but without taking away from a serious topic.

Well done Austin, Jack and Ollie, and many thanks to their sponsors for helping fund the event - OneForty One New Zealand, Sport Tasman, Craigs Investment Partners, NBS, Beca, Hamish.Fletcher Lawyers and RISE: Respect Inspire Support Empower.
