A single road closure nearly disrupted eight months of work.

Over the weekend, Tasman Medical completed a significant delivery and installation at an Auckland Hospital. This project had been eight months in the making and involved considerable planning and coordination between our team in New Plymouth and the hospital project teams in Auckland.

We were lucky to reach Auckland before the road closed. Had our timing been slightly different, eight months of work and a carefully coordinated hospital installation could have been significantly disrupted.

We completed the installation, but the journey home was another matter. Our trucks had to return to New Plymouth via Whanganui, while team members leaving Auckland at 1.00 pm faced a journey of up to eight hours.

For a regional manufacturer, this is much more than an inconvenience. It affects freight costs, staff wellbeing, project timing and our ability to confidently meet commitments to major customers.

Taranaki businesses are encouraged to grow, invest and compete for significant projects across New Zealand. However, that becomes much harder when our connection with the rest of the North Island can be so easily disrupted, with no practical alternative route.

We need a clear, long-term strategy for the resilience of Taranaki’s road connections, including practical alternatives when the main route is closed, better communication with affected businesses and clarity about the infrastructure investment required.

This will require a coordinated response from New Plymouth District Council, Venture Taranaki, Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, our MPs McLeod and candidates Clinton-Gohdes across all political parties, local business leaders and central government.

Businesses need more than acknowledgement of the problem. We need to understand the plan, who is responsible for advancing it and when we can expect progress.

Reliable access to the rest of New Zealand is essential to Taranaki’s future.



Update: We are very grateful to everyone involved in reopening the road last night. We appreciate the teams who worked to restore this vital connection and get traffic moving again.

The reopening is welcome news, but it does not lessen the need for a long-term strategy to improve the resilience of Taranaki’s road connections.

After careful consideration, Tasman Medical Equipment has decided to withdraw from the B Corp certification process.

This decision has not been made lightly. We continue to support the principles and values that B Corp promotes, many of which have been embedded in the way our business has operated for decades. Our commitment to ethical business practices, our staff, our customers, our suppliers, and our community remains unchanged.

However, we have found that the practical value of certification has not justified the significant investment of time and resources required to maintain it. There has been little or no demand for B Corp certification from either our customers or our supplier base, and our engagement with B Lab has been limited almost entirely to generic, automated communications, with little meaningful or personal support.

We were also disappointed that, despite being one of only three B Corp Certified businesses in our region and one of only a handful within New Zealand's medical equipment sector, we have never been contacted by a New Zealand-based representative. Given B Corp's emphasis on community and local business engagement, this lack of connection was unexpected.

While we are stepping away from certification, we are not stepping away from the values that led us to pursue it. Tasman Medical Equipment will continue to operate responsibly, support our people and community, and manufacture quality products with integrity. Those commitments are part of who we are—they do not depend on certification.

This marks an important milestone in Tasman Medical's continued growth and reinforces our commitment to supporting New Zealand's healthcare sector through locally manufactured solutions.

New Plymouth's Taranaki Base Hospital has marked a major advancement in regional healthcare today with the official opening of its new acute services building, Te Rau Mātāpuna o Taranaki.

Associate Health Minister Matt Doocey led official proceedings for the six-storey east wing facility, which brings core acute and specialist medical services under one roof.

Formalities began this morning with a pōwhiri, followed by the formal gifting of the facility’s name by iwi partners.

Mr Doocey delivered a speech alongside local health officials before cutting the ribbon, concluding the ceremony with a plaque unveiling to mark the completion of the major infrastructure project.

Spanning 22,000 square metres, the new east wing building represents the completion of Stage Two of Project Maunga, a long-term initiative designed to modernise the hospital’s original 1950s campus.

This purpose-built block houses a new emergency department, intensive care unit, maternity and neonatal services, radiology, and clinical laboratories.

Capacity at the hospital expands to 151 patient spaces, providing an additional 55 slots compared to previous provisions.

Cultural identity forms a core part of the structural design, guided by hospital Tiriti partner group Taumaruroa, which represents local waka and the Ngāti te Whiti hapū.

At a community blessing last month, cultural advisor Te Poihi Campbell explained that the name Te Rau Mātāpuna o Taranaki refers to the pristine pools and water channels on Taranaki Maunga. "We want those waters to flow into those who visit this building," Mr Campbell said, noting that the name reflects the connection between the mountain and regional wellbeing.

Large-scale artistic works by local creator Rangi Kipa are integrated throughout the floors, accompanied by educational storyboards to help visitors understand the narrative of water as a cascading source of life.

Health New Zealand Taranaki Māori Health Directorate chief executive Tamati Neho stated that staff will be trained to share these narratives with patients to ensure a culturally responsive care experience.

Environmental performance sat at the forefront of the construction process, making this the first public health facility in New Zealand to achieve a 5 Green Star design rating.

Built by Leighs Construction with architectural design by Warren and Mahoney, the facility incorporates a natural ventilation system, advanced seismic engineering, and a rooftop helicopter pad to streamline emergency transfers.

Financial backing for the complex build required a significant crown investment, including a $59.2 million funding boost announced last year to cover material cost pressures.

In a government statement, Health Minister Simeon Brown previously described the redevelopment as a critical investment to ensure the health system could support a growing and ageing regional population.

Clinical staff are scheduled to begin moving operations into the new wing over the coming weeks as final equipment checks conclude.

This opening follows several other milestones under Project Maunga Stage Two, including the completion of the Te Huhi Raupō renal unit, the Te Puna Wai Kātea mental health facility, and the Te Hōpua Whakahauora cancer centre.

Medical services will begin transitioning into the new building from Monday.

It's with sadness that we acknowledge the end of Critical Board by Critical Design.

For many years, Critical Board has been an important component in selected Tasman Medical products, valued for its innovative approach and contribution to more sustainable healthcare environments. We have appreciated the opportunity to incorporate this New Zealand-made material into our medical trolleys and equipment.

This week, without realising it at the time, we delivered what will likely be our final product featuring Critical Board. While we are disappointed that this material will no longer be available, we want to thank the team at Critical Design for challenging conventional thinking and demonstrating that there are alternative ways to design and manufacture products with sustainability in mind.

Innovation often begins with those willing to question the status quo. We wish everyone involved at Critical Design all the very best for the future and thank them for the role they have played in helping shape more sustainable solutions within healthcare.
