Time to restock my home birth kit! In Aotearoa, Midwives are trained and highly skilled in supporting wāhine to birth their pēpi at home. While home birth isn’t the right choice for everyone, for low-risk whānau it reduces the risk of unnecessary intervention, improves both maternal and neonatal outcomes and can significantly improve their birth experience.

As home birth Midwives, we are thorough, creative, passionate, intuitive, patient, determined and can multitask at a level only truly understood if you’ve witnessed it! Whether we are sitting in the corner with a cup of tea and all of our senses wide open…. Or managing a critical situation with only what we have in front of us and the team work of the beautiful wāhine who stand with us – we’ve got you!

Questions I get asked often – what do I carry in my home birth kit? This is something we will discuss in depth when planning your home birth, we carry multiple medications, oxygen and equipment for managing emergencies at home, which are rare… but our most valued tools are - eyes, ears, nose, hands, instincts and patience!

Discussing Group B Strep today with māmā at our Ōpunake clinic - Sara Wickham is an excellent resource and we have her books to loan out. When doing lab urine tests and vaginal swabs, this could be picked up. It is important to know how a diagnosis of Group B Strep could impact your pregnancy.

Happy Tuesday ☀️ We are big fans of Sara Wickham's mission for supporting true informed consent for parents making decisions during pregnancy, birth and postnatal. Check out this quick overview to help inform your decision making when deciding whether or not to give your pēpi Vitamin K after birth.

Dr Sara Wickham, author of Vitamin K and the Newborn, shares things every parent needs to know before making a decision about vitamin K.

Adré here, in our cosy Ōākura clinic. Restocking our pamphlets and tidying up the shelves. We offer many resources to pregnant māmā and whānau: printed pamphlets, books, and also email info on specific issues related to your pregnancy. We particularly love the wisdom from Sara Wickham, Maternity Consumer Council, Rachel Reed, La Leche League, and many others. As midwives we believe in making sure you get all the information relevant to make informed choices in your pregnancy.

Excellent labour cheat sheet 🙌

One of our Midwives created a little cheat sheet for labour support. She shared it with one of the women in her care and she turned it into this amazing graphic. Thankyou!
Save to your phone especially for your labour support person as a reminder about ways to support you
