🌸 Rākau Spotlight: Kōtukutuku

Have you ever noticed the beautiful pink and purple flowers of Kōtukutuku growing around our ngahere?

Kōtukutuku is Aotearoa's native tree fuchsia and is an important part of both our natural environment and mātauranga Māori.

🌿 Did you know?
Kōtukutuku has long been recognised in rongoā Māori. Its leaves have traditionally been used in steam baths, for soothing bruises and minor skin burns, and in preparations to support fevers and body aches.

🐦 More than a beautiful tree
Kōtukutuku also plays an important role in supporting our native wildlife.
Its flowers provide nectar for tūī, korimako (bellbirds), and tauhou (silvereyes).
Kererū eat the berries and help spread the seeds, allowing new Kōtukutuku to grow throughout our ngahere.

Every native plant has its own place and purpose within te taiao, reminding us how connected our wellbeing is with the world around us.

Have you seen this growing in the ngahere? 🌿

Angiangi, also known as Old Man’s Beard, is a lichen that grows on other trees. It can be easily overlooked, but has a place within traditional rongoā Māori.

Once gathered, it can be dried and ground into a fine powder. It has been traditionally used to help soothe cuts, grazes, sores, rashes, irritated skin, eczema, and other minor skin conditions.

Rongoā Māori reminds us that there is so much knowledge held within our native environment, sometimes in the places and plants we might otherwise walk past. 🌱

Whiro marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle. The sky is dark, the energy may feel low, and our tinana and hinengaro can call for rest.

This is not always the time to push forward. It can be a wā for slowing down, clearing what has become heavy and preparing the whenua within us for what comes next.

Gentle hauora practices for Whiro:

🌿 Rest and reduce unnecessary demands
🌿 Sit quietly with karakia or meditation
🌿 Enjoy a warm cup of rongoā Māori tea
🌿 Use gentle mirimiri to ease tension
🌿 Take a cleansing shower or wai soak
🌿 Journal what you are ready to release
🌿 Spend quiet time with whānau or in nature
🌿 Set simple intentions without forcing action

A warm kawakawa or karamū tea may offer a comforting way to pause and reconnect with yourself. Choose rākau you know are suitable for your tinana and circumstances.

Some days it is calm and still. Other days it is wild and powerful.
Our own journeys can be much the same.

There will be times when life feels peaceful, and there will be times that challenge us. Like the tides, these moments come and go.

Spending time by the moana reminds us to slow down, take a breath, and reconnect with ourselves and the world around us.

In te ao Māori, our wellbeing is deeply connected to te taiao. When we spend time in nature, we are reminded that healing isn't always something we have to force, it can also come from simply being present.

Why we harvest with tikanga

For us, harvesting rongoā is about much more than gathering plants.
It begins with tikanga, approaching te taiao with respect, gratitude, and an understanding that we are taking from a living environment.

Before harvesting, we acknowledge the mauri of the plant through karakia and intention. We take only what is needed, with care, so the plant can continue to thrive and remain for future generations.

This way of harvesting has been passed down through generations. It reminds us that rongoā is not just about the plant itself, but about the relationship we have with te taiao.

When we care for the whenua, the whenua continues to care for us.
