The expression "I wouldn't touch that with a 10-foot pole" also has roots in 19th Century New Orleans cemeteries.

In historic New Orleans, burial practices looked different to the rest of the U.S. due to the high water table. Burial was not a viable option.
Instead, families would use above-ground tombs and wall vaults, where bodies were placed in a vault for "a year and a day".
When a body decomposes inside a vault, gases built up. To safely open or “burp” the tomb, workers used long poles, often around ten feet long to crack open the vault door from a distance. This kept them away from any sudden release of pressure, odor, and other unpleasantries.
The 10-foot pole was then used to push the decomposed remains to the back of the tomb to make room for new family members.
