🩹 When did you last check your first aid kit?

Many of us have one tucked away somewhere at home, in the car or at work but would it actually have what you need if someone was injured?

This interesting Stuff article asks a pharmacist what they always keep in their own first aid kit, with some practical ideas for making sure you're prepared for those everyday cuts, burns, bites, sprains and unexpected mishaps.

It might be the perfect reminder to pull yours out this weekend, check what's inside and replace anything that's missing or expired!

A little preparation can make a big difference when you need it most. πŸ’š

Chemist Warehouse pharmacist Piyara Perera shares what she keeps in her home first aid kit.

πŸ“Ί Did you catch Paddy Gower Has Issues on Tuesday night?

One of the topics discussed was the growing use of peptides in New Zealand, exploring what they are, why they're becoming more popular, and some of the concerns around their safety and regulation. Recent advice from health authorities has highlighted the risks of purchasing unapproved peptide products online, where the contents, quality and safety cannot always be verified.

We're especially proud to share that Dr Anna Skinner, who was interviewed by Paddy Gower on the programme, is also our Clinical Director here at Kauri HealthCare.

In her role as the Ministry of Health's Chief Clinical Advisor, Dr Skinner provided expert insight into why New Zealanders should be cautious about unapproved peptide products and the importance of making informed healthcare decisions based on evidence.

If you missed the episode, you can catch up anytime on ThreeNow. https://www.threenow.co.nz/shows/paddy-gower-has-issues/S4695-902

We're incredibly fortunate to have such experienced clinical leadership supporting both our patients and the wider New Zealand health sector. πŸ’š

πŸ’™ A Gentle Reminder from Our Team

During July, we had 71 missed appointments. 71 opportunities where another patient could have been seen. They are less than last month which is great but still higher than we would like.

We understand that things come up β€” but if you’re unable to make your appointment, please give us a quick call to reschedule. Even a short heads-up makes a big difference.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping us support our whole community. πŸ’™

πŸ’š Know Your Blood Pressure

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, which is why it's often called the "silent killer."

Regular blood pressure checks can help detect problems early and reduce your risk of:
❀️ Heart attack
🧠 Stroke
🩺 Kidney disease

If it's been a while since your last check, book an appointment with your GP or nurse.

Your future self will thank you.

πŸ€’ Chickenpox or Measles – What’s the Difference?

Although both illnesses can cause a rash and fever, they are very different diseases.

πŸ” Chickenpox
β€’ An itchy, blister-like rash that appears in waves
β€’ Rash usually starts on the chest, back or face before spreading
β€’ Mild fever and tiredness are common
β€’ Caused by the varicella-zoster virus

πŸ”΄ Measles
β€’ High fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes usually appear before the rash
β€’ Rash starts on the face and spreads down the body
β€’ Tiny white spots may appear inside the mouth before the rash
β€’ Can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, brain inflammation and, in some cases, death

πŸ’‘ A reminder: Many of us remember the days when β€œchickenpox parties” were common to deliberately expose children to the virus. However, this is absolutely not appropriate for measles. Measles is far more contagious and can cause severe illness, particularly in babies, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Deliberately exposing someone to measles can have very serious consequences.

πŸ’‰ Vaccination is the best protection. The MMR vaccine protects against measles, while the chickenpox vaccine helps prevent chickenpox.

If you or your child develops a fever with a rash, please call your medical centre before coming in. This helps protect other patients and allows our team to advise you on the safest next steps.

Stay informed, stay protected, and help keep our community healthy.

🧀 Winter Tip: Keep Moving

Cold weather can make it tempting to stay curled up indoors, but regular movement is one of the best things you can do for both your body and mind.

Even 20-30 minutes of activity can:
βœ” Improve your mood
βœ” Help keep joints flexible
βœ” Boost circulation
βœ” Support your immune system

You don't need a gymβ€”walking, stretching, gardening or dancing around the lounge all count!

Every little bit helps.
