🌿 International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples – 9 August 💛

Today we recognise and celebrate Indigenous communities around the world, while also highlighting the importance of equity in health and wellbeing.

Here in Aotearoa, it’s an opportunity to reflect on how we can better support the hauora of Māori — ensuring access to culturally safe, respectful, and holistic healthcare that honours tikanga and whānau-centred approaches.

Indigenous health is about more than just physical wellbeing. It includes mental, spiritual, and social health — all deeply connected to identity, culture, whenua, and community.

🌿 Promoting equitable access to healthcare
🤝 Supporting culturally appropriate services
💬 Listening to and uplifting Indigenous voices
💛 Strengthening whānau and community wellbeing

By working together, we can help create a future where Indigenous people thrive, and health outcomes are improved for generations to come.

August is Stomach Cancer Awareness Month – a time to raise awareness of one of Aotearoa’s most overlooked cancers and the impact it has on our communities.

In New Zealand, more than 400 people are diagnosed with stomach (gastric) cancer each year, and around 274 people die from the disease annually. Survival rates remain low, largely because symptoms are often vague and the cancer is frequently diagnosed late.

Common symptoms can be easy to overlook, including:
• Ongoing indigestion or heartburn
• Feeling full quickly when eating
• Unexplained weight loss
• Abdominal discomfort or pain
• Nausea or loss of appetite

Risk factors include H. pylori infection, smoking, high intake of salty or processed foods, alcohol use, and family history. The good news is that some of these risks can be reduced, and early detection can make a real difference.

Stomach Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder to:
✔ Know the symptoms
✔ Talk to your GP if something doesn’t feel right
✔ Be aware of your whānau history
✔ Support equitable access to testing and treatment

Together, we can raise awareness, encourage earlier diagnosis, and support better outcomes for all New Zealanders. 💙

🤝 International Day of Friendship 💛

Today we celebrate the people who lift us up, stand by us, and make life a little brighter — our friends.

Friendship and meaningful social connection play a powerful role in our mental wellbeing. Having someone to talk to, laugh with, or simply share a moment with can reduce stress, improve mood, and help us feel a sense of belonging.

Friendships today come in many forms — from lifelong friends and close whānau, to workmates, community connections, and even online friendships. Whether it’s a quick message, a video call, or catching up in person, these connections all matter and can have a real impact on how we feel.

🌿 Take a moment today to reach out to someone
💬 Check in, have a kōrero, or plan time together
💛 And if you’re feeling disconnected, know that support is always available

Let’s celebrate the friendships that support our wellbeing — in all the ways they show up in our lives.

🌿💚 World Self-Care Day 💚🌿

Today is a reminder that looking after yourself isn’t a luxury — it’s essential for your health and wellbeing.

Self-care means taking small, intentional steps each day to support your physical, mental, and emotional health. When we care for ourselves, we’re better equipped to handle stress, prevent illness, and stay connected with the people and things that matter most.

✨ Simple self-care strategies include:
• Getting enough sleep and rest
• Eating nourishing, balanced meals
• Staying active — even a short walk counts
• Taking time to relax and recharge
• Connecting with friends, whānau, or support networks
• Setting boundaries and asking for help when needed
• Taking breaks from screens and busy schedules

💡 The benefits of self-care:
✔️ Reduced stress and burnout
✔️ Improved mood and mental health
✔️ Better physical health and immunity
✔️ Increased energy and focus
✔️ Stronger resilience in everyday life

Remember — self-care looks different for everyone. Start small, be kind to yourself, and make your wellbeing a priority 💚

✨ Matariki and Mental Wellbeing ✨

Matariki is a special time of year for reflection, remembrance, connection, and gratitude. 🌌

Taking a moment to reflect on the past year can help us process our experiences and recognise how far we’ve come. Remembering loved ones who have passed allows space for grief, honouring their place in our lives and keeping their memory alive.

Matariki also encourages us to reconnect — with whānau, friends, and our wider community. Strengthening these connections can provide a powerful sense of belonging and support.

Practising gratitude, whether it’s for the people around us, the small everyday moments, or the journey we’re on, has been shown to improve mood and overall mental wellbeing.

This Matariki, take time to slow down, reflect, connect, and give thanks. Small moments of intention can make a big difference to how we feel. 💫
