Matariki Celebration with Mana o te Tangata

Mana O Te Tangata Matariki gathering was a heartwarming celebration of Te Mātahi o Te Tau, uniting whānau, friends, and community in a shared space of aroha and connection. Whaiora enjoyed delicious kai prepared by Tāne Mauri Oho, Mana Kai Hauora and kaimahi with lively entertainment, and the joy of being together.
Special highlights Waiata Mohio and Tararua Rangatahi taking the stage to share their waiata and kapa haka filling the room with pride and mana.
Tararua Raranga presenting our Manukura with He Taonga Tuku iho -Te Pihi Ora , each tauira contributed pihepihe (pōkinikini) destined for a taonga Te pihi ora – What began as individual contributions has become one collective kākahu. It represents our Tararua rōpū, our unity, and the whakawhanaungatanga that has been woven throughout our time together.
Music was at the heart of the celebration, with Mana Vibes making a powerful return — a rebirth from their earlier days as Mana Beats. Their set showcased exceptional musical talent, blending soulful covers with beautifully crafted original songs, each performance resonating with authenticity and passion.
A fun Matariki quiz was also featured with spot prizes, adding laughter and friendly competition to the day.
In a moving moment, everyone paused to remember loved ones and cherished pets who have passed, honouring their memory beneath the guiding stars of Matariki. The event beautifully wove together a true expression of Matariki’s reflection, celebration, and the spirit of renewal.

✨️ Where Mana Thrives Communities Rise ✨️
We received this beautiful message from Domonique, a psychologist and fellow Kiwi from the Out of the Box Performance Team, following our Manukura Leilani Maraku keynote at the 2026 International Mental Health Conference on the Gold Coast.

Domonique created a short reel capturing some of the key messages and reflections that resonated with her from Leilani’s kōrero.

Ngā mihi nui, Domonique, for sharing this thoughtful reflection and helping amplify our message: where mana thrives, communities rise and together, we can redefine recovery.

He rā whakahirahira at the National Addictions Lived Experience and Whānau Forum

The hui brought together lived-experience leaders, whānau, peer-support services and sector partners from across Aotearoa to strengthen our collective voice and shape the future of addiction support.

We celebrated significant progress, including the stigma and discrimination campaign, the development of a national peer-services directory, the launch of the LEWF website and growing collaboration with the National Addiction Clinical Forum.

A special acknowledgement to Sheridan for sharing the history of consumer and lived-experience leadership in the addiction sector. Her kōrero reminded us that today’s progress stands on the courage and persistence of those who came before us.

Our next challenge is to clearly demonstrate the value and impact of lived-experience and whānau leadership ensuring our voices are not simply heard, but meaningfully influence policy, funding, service design and decision-making.

Together, we are mighty. When lived experience, whānau wisdom, clinical knowledge and kaupapa Māori leadership come together, meaningful system change is possible.

Still reflecting on what was an incredible privilege.

I am deeply honoured to have been invited as a keynote speaker at the 2026 International Mental Health Conference on the Gold Coast, where I presented "Where Mana Thrives, Communities Rise: Returning Power, Restoring Mana, Redefining Recovery."

Standing alongside mental health leaders, clinicians, researchers, and lived experience advocates from around the world was both humbling and inspiring. It was an opportunity to share the kaupapa of Mana o te Tangata Trust and to demonstrate that recovery is not simply about reducing symptoms it is about restoring hope, strengthening identity, reconnecting people with whānau and community, and creating systems where mana can flourish.

One of the greatest privileges was being able to share a Kaupapa Māori perspective on the international stage. Our mātauranga, our values, and our lived experience continue to offer important lessons about what genuine, person-centred, culturally grounded mental health care can look like.

This experience reinforced something I have always believed: meaningful change happens when we are prepared to challenge traditional thinking, listen deeply to lived experience, and work in partnership with communities rather than doing things to them.

I want to acknowledge the incredible team at Mana o te Tangata Trust. This recognition belongs to all of our kaimahi, trustees, tangata whaiora and whānau. Every day you demonstrate what it means to walk alongside people with compassion, courage and unwavering belief in their potential.

A special thank you to the organisers of the International Mental Health Conference for the invitation, your generosity, and for creating a platform where diverse voices and Indigenous worldviews were welcomed and celebrated. It was a privilege to contribute and to connect with so many inspiring people from across the globe.

"Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua."
I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on the past.

As we look to the future of mental health, may we continue to draw strength from our histories, our cultures, our communities, and, most importantly, the people we serve.

Where Mana Thrives, Communities Rise

Returning from the Global Leadership Hui in Canada, I am filled with pride, gratitude, and inspiration. It was an honour to share the incredible mahi happening across our communities and showcase how we centre whānau, uphold mana, and create opportunities for people to thrive.

What stood out most was that our strength comes from our collective efforts. Every kaimahi, tangata whaiora, leader, and supporter plays a vital role in the impact we are making together.

Connecting with changemakers from around the world reinforced the importance of leading with authenticity, culture, innovation, lived experience and community at the heart of everything we do.

Thank you all for your dedication and commitment. The stories I shared belonged to every one of us. I return energised and excited for the opportunities ahead as we continue creating positive change together.
