In Aotearoa, too many children grow up without the presence of a safe and loving father. Stats show that homes affected by domestic violence leave our young ones caught in the crossfire of fear and instability. When fathers withdraw, lash out, or stay silent, the message passed on is that masculinity = control or distance. But the truth is: real strength is found in showing up, not powering over.

Your kids don’t need perfect dads; they need present ones.

They need a dad who is willing to break the cycle, confront their own pain, and model a healthier story of what it means to be a man. Every choice you make echoes into the next generation either wounding or healing.

The challenge is simple: choose courage. Get help if you’re struggling with anger. Reach out if you’re carrying shame. Stand tall by kneeling low to listen, apologise, and love.

A better Aotearoa starts in our homes, and it starts with us as fathers.

One of the biggest barriers for men getting help isn’t a lack of support it’s the story many of us have grown up with: “real men sort themselves out.”

That narrative makes reaching out feel like weakness. The stats show how deep it runs: In 2023/24, there were 445 male suspected self-inflicted deaths vs 172 female.

When men bottle things up, distress often comes out in destructive behaviors... anger, alcohol, violence or silence.

That’s why community matters. A strong community challenges the "harden up” script by normalising kōrero and showing that courage isn’t about carrying the weight alone but about sharing it.

When men see other men opening up, it chips away at shame. It creates a culture where asking for help is strength, not weakness. That shift can save lives.

Anger isn’t the only reason to reach out for help! Sometimes it’s not about losing your cool, it’s about living in an environment that keeps turning up the heat. You might not be the one throwing the punches or shouting the loudest, but if you’re stuck in a toxic space, that pressure can build up too.

Getting support isn’t a sign you’re weak or the ‘problem’ rather it’s how you step out of the pressure and start breathing fresh air again.
