Some of my favourite winter wellness remedies cost almost nothing - because they’re already in my kitchen.
I’m a big believer in going back to basics.
Long before we had cupboards full of wellness products, people used food, herbs and simple household ingredients to soothe symptoms and support the body. And there are still plenty of those things I use regularly with my own family.
A few staples in our house:
🌿 Oats + baking soda baths for itchy skin
For minor itchy skin, I’ll put plain oats into a tightly tied mesh bag or cloth and add it to a lukewarm bath, sometimes with a little baking soda. Oats are wonderfully soothing on irritated skin.
🍊 Vitamin-C-rich foods through winter
Citrus is an easy one — oranges, mandarins, lemon — but vegetables like broccoli and capsicum are great sources too. One of my favourite combinations is fresh orange with a little lemon and mint.
🍯 Honey + lemon for sore throats
Simple, inexpensive and genuinely soothing. This is one I often make for my kids when they have a scratchy throat or cough. (Just remember honey isn’t suitable for babies under 12 months.)
🧄 Garlic + lemon + honey
My stronger, more grown-up version when I’m feeling under the weather! Garlic is one of those traditional kitchen staples I love incorporating into food and drinks when winter bugs are doing the rounds.
🫚 Ginger for an unsettled stomach
I’ll make a very mild ginger tea with honey for the kids, or a stronger one for myself when my stomach feels unsettled.
🌱 Peppermint tea
Possibly the most underrated thing in my cupboard. I love it anyway, but peppermint can also be helpful for digestive discomfort and bloating, so I always keep some handy.
None of these are miracle cures, and they’re certainly not a replacement for medical care when someone is genuinely unwell.
They’re just simple ways I like to support the body and make ourselves more comfortable using things we already have.
Sometimes wellness doesn’t need to come in an expensive bottle.
Sometimes it looks like a warm bath, a mug of tea, nourishing food and giving your body what it needs to recover.
