To all our pregnant woman,
Please be aware that you will be contacted about your scheduled appointments and what to do. If you are requiring face to face assessments please be aware that you will be screened and are required to have a face covering. No support people or children are able to attend visits. You will be asked to wait in your car and txt your arrival and wait to be told when to come in.
Please check out Pukekohe maternity FB page for visiting policies, at level 4 there is a NO visiting at all policy.
We will keep you updated if and when there are changes.

Having baby soon at one of our community birthing units or Middlemore Hospital or want to visit mama and baby?

The following criteria continues in Alert Level 2:
- Two support people for women in labour who have been screened at the entrance. Only one person can visit after birth (postnatal).
- One of those support people can continue to visit mother and baby 7am-8pm daily - they are not able to leave and return in the same day. The time limit to the visit is at the discretion of the charge nurse/ward manager.
- One meal can to be brought in from home.
- Baby’s car seat can be brought in to where baby is so they can be transported home in a warm seat.
- Children under 15-years cannot visit.

If there is a need for more support people due to compassionate grounds for the expectant or new mother, then this process will be explained to you at the time. All these measures help us to track any source of an infection if required to keep everyone safe. Thank you for helping us to continue to protect new mums, babies, whaanau and staff against COVID-19.

One month ago, I was 38 weeks pregnant, full of anxiety, anger and fear. Hospital protocols were changing daily. Visitors were banned. Laboring women could only have one person with them. This isn't what I pictured delivering my third baby would look like.

Two weeks later, my husband and I walked into labor and delivery and were handed masks. We were told to wear those any time any one entered our room. The nurses were always masked, as was the doctor. This was my third baby and the whole process was so different than the other two.

During my first two deliveries we had guests in and out while I labored and more guests after delivery. There were no masks. No scary protocols. It was a celebration and everyone was invited.

This time, it was just my husband and I. The room was quiet. No chaos of visitors. The conversations were just him and I. Just the two of us for the first time in six and a half years.

I'm just going to say it: delivering during the pandemic was a blessing in disguise.

We delivered with quiet hallways in a quiet room filled with just the three of us. We welcomed this baby with no expectations of people rushing in during skin-to-skin. We established nursing without having to wear an awkward nursing cover.

It was just us and our little guy. It was perfect.

Twenty-four hours later we returned home. Due to social distancing, there were no visitors and no school. There was no early morning school drop offs or mid-day school pick ups. There was no "panic cleaning" for visitors. There was no schedule and low expectations.

Our girls have been able to bond with their little brother all day, everyday. Having no schedule with a newborn has been dreamy. We are all sleeping, nursing, and bonding with no interruptions. There's no pressure to get out of the house. There's no reason to try to squeeze into pre-pregnancy clothes.

If you are a pregnant momma set to deliver during all the chaos of the world right now, rest easy. Take a deep breath. While this is probably not how you imagined your delivery, find the blessing through this mess.

Enjoy this break from real life, snuggle up with your newborn and enjoy every last minute of the newborn stage. Too soon, that teeny tiny baby won't be teeny tiny anymore.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

To all our Charisma clients.

We would like to acknowledge these unprecedented times currently impacting everyone due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
Following guidelines from the Ministry of Health and the NZ College of Midwives we will restrict midwifery visits and unnecessary face-to-face contact to minimize the chance of transmission.

We are going to implement the NICE guidelines for uncomplicated pregnancies- (please see attached schedule and related websites) with regards to the schedule of antenatal visits.

We are aware that this may be a stressful time for you and your whanau, but we will continue to remain available to you to discuss any concerns or urgent matters via phone.
We also encourage pregnant women to attend antenatal appointments individually, without additional people. Counties Manukau DHB have also specified no one under the age of 15yrs old should be visiting our hospital facilities.
We are anticipating there may be further restrictions to antenatal, hospital and postnatal visits and we will advise you accordingly.

We cannot stress strongly enough that if you or anyone in your family are unwell you should NOT attend your appointment and CALL to discuss follow up visits.

Please stay safe and watch for updates.
