Every emotion has a purpose.

Emotions aren't good or bad—they're information.

Fear may tell us something feels unsafe.
Sadness may remind us of something we've lost.
Anger may signal that a boundary has been crossed.
Joy often points us towards what matters most.

While emotions don't always reflect objective reality, they do tell us something about our experience and what our mind and body are responding to.

Rather than asking, "How do I stop feeling this?" try asking:

💚 "What is this emotion trying to tell me?"

When we become curious instead of critical, emotions become easier to understand and respond to.

Some moments feel a little surreal... and this is one of them. 💚

I'm incredibly honoured to be featured in Women of Wellbeing NZ—a beautiful collection celebrating women across Aotearoa who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of others.

To be included alongside so many inspiring women is both humbling and a privilege.

When I began my journey as a social worker and counsellor, my hope was simple: to create a space where people could feel safe, heard, and supported as they navigated life's challenges. Every conversation, every story shared, and every step towards healing reminds me why I do this work.

Being part of this book isn't just about my story—it's about recognising the importance of mental health, connection, compassion, and the incredible women who dedicate themselves to supporting the wellbeing of others.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted me to walk alongside you. Your courage continues to inspire me every single day.

If you're looking for an uplifting read celebrating women creating positive change across New Zealand, I'd love for you to check it out.

The book is inspirational and shows you the wide range of choices you have when it comes to your health and happiness. What's even more exciting is that all profits from the book are going to Women's Refuge, NZ.

📖 You can find the book here: Amazon.com Women in Wellbeing : Aotearoa eBook : Madden, Chenin: Kindle Store: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/1067028005?ref_=pe_93986420_774957520

Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this project to life. I'm so grateful to be part of it. 💚

Pause. Notice. Reflect. 🌿

We often move through our days on autopilot.

Rushing from one task to the next.

Responding before we've had a chance to understand what we're feeling.

Judging ourselves for struggling.

What if, instead of immediately reacting, you gave yourself permission to pause?

✨ Pause — Take one slow breath. Create a moment of space.

✨ Notice — What is happening in your body? What emotions are present? What thoughts are showing up?

✨ Reflect — What might these experiences be trying to tell you? What do you need right now?

Sometimes we don't need to fix everything immediately.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is become aware.

Awareness helps us move from reacting automatically to responding intentionally.

Small moments of noticing can become the beginning of meaningful change.

💚 Reflection: What is one thing you notice about yourself today, without trying to change it?

Reflection 🌿

When life feels overwhelming, we often ask ourselves:

"Why can't I cope?"

Perhaps a gentler question is:

"What might my nervous system be trying to tell me?"

Your nervous system isn't judging you.

It's responding to what it perceives as safe or unsafe.

Today, take a moment to notice—not criticise—how your body is responding.

Sometimes awareness is the first step towards change.

💚 What do you notice about your nervous system today?

Have you ever wondered why some days you can cope with life's challenges, while on other days even the smallest thing feels overwhelming?

It isn't because you've become weaker overnight.

Often, it's because your nervous system has reached its current capacity.

Your nervous system is constantly working behind the scenes, scanning for safety and deciding whether you need to connect, protect, or conserve energy.

When life becomes stressful, demanding, or overwhelming, you may find yourself moving outside your **Window of Flexibility** into survival responses such as fight, flight, or shutdown.

These responses aren't signs that something is wrong with you.

They're signs that your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do—protect you.

Understanding how your nervous system works can help you make sense of experiences like:
🌿 Anxiety and feeling constantly on edge
🌿 Emotional overwhelm
🌿 Feeling disconnected or numb
🌿 Irritability and difficulty concentrating
🌿 Exhaustion and burnout
🌿 Why coping changes from day to day

I've just published a new article that explores:
✓ How the nervous system works
✓ What the Window of Flexibility is (often called the Window of Tolerance)
✓ Why we move into survival states
✓ How therapy can help build greater flexibility and resilience

Sometimes, understanding what's happening inside your body is the first step towards responding with greater compassion instead of self-criticism.

I hope this resource helps you better understand yourself or someone you care about.

Have you ever thought...

"I don't know what I'd even say if I went to counselling."

If so, you're not alone. It's one of the most common things I hear.

Starting counselling or meeting a new therapist can feel uncomfortable, intimidating, and even overwhelming. For many people, simply walking through the door or joining that first session is the hardest step.

Asking for support takes courage. It means allowing yourself to be seen during a time when you may feel vulnerable. Yet as humans, we're often wired to protect ourselves rather than openly share what we're going through.

The good news is this:

You don't need to have the right words before you begin.

You don't need to know where to start, have everything figured out, or tell your whole story in the first session.

My role as a counsellor is to create a safe, compassionate space where we can gently explore what's happening for you. Together, we'll find the language, make sense of your experiences, and work at a pace that feels right for you.

Healing isn't about saying the perfect thing. It's about taking one small step at a time.

Although beginning therapy can feel daunting, it can also become one of the most rewarding journeys—helping you build greater self-understanding, emotional wellbeing, and a life that feels more meaningful and aligned with who you are.

💚 If you've been thinking about reaching out, perhaps this is your reminder that you don't have to do it alone.

Anxiety is often misunderstood.

Many people think it's something to "get over" or simply "stop worrying." In reality, anxiety is a natural survival response designed to protect you. The challenge is that sometimes this alarm system becomes overactive, making everyday situations feel overwhelming.

When we understand why anxiety happens, it becomes easier to respond with curiosity instead of fear.

Swipe through this carousel to learn how anxiety works and why understanding your nervous system is an important step toward healing.

If you'd like to explore this topic further, visit the Understanding Anxiety article on the EnHale website.

💚 Remember: Anxiety doesn't define you. With the right support and strategies, it can become something you understand rather than something that controls you.

When life feels overwhelming, our nervous system is designed to react quickly.

Sometimes that's exactly what we need. Other times, those automatic reactions can leave us feeling stuck, disconnected, or saying and doing things that don't reflect who we want to be.

Creating a small pause can make a meaningful difference.

✨ Pause – Interrupt the automatic cycle.
🌿 Breathe – Give your body a signal that you're safe enough to slow down.
💚 Notice – Observe your thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations with curiosity rather than judgment.
🌱 Respond – Choose your next step based on your values, not just the intensity of the moment.

Responding instead of reacting doesn't mean ignoring difficult emotions. It means making space for them while deciding how you want to move forward.

Even a few mindful breaths can help create that space.

What is one thing you can pause and notice today?

What we experience in the body can be an immediate response—an internal message about what matters, what feels safe, or what feels threatened. Feelings are the mind’s way of making meaning from that experience.

Neither is “wrong.” Neither needs to be fixed.

The shift often isn’t about choosing one over the other, but learning to notice both—so you can respond with more clarity, steadiness, and self-understanding.

You don’t have to argue with your inner world to understand it.
