Marguerite Sakey knows what the end of life looks like. As a retired hospice nurse, she has supported hundreds of people during this incredibly profound time. But it was caring for her husband, John, that, naturally, left the biggest imprint on her.

John died in September 2025. Surrounded by those he loved, and locking eyes one last time with his wife of 53 years, he couldn’t have had a more peaceful death, Marguerite says.

But if she wasn’t a retired hospice nurse, who knew to engage the support of Harbour Hospice, would it have been peaceful?, Marguerite questions.

💛💛A huge and heartfelt thank you to Viv James and the team at Race4Life, who have given so many of our patients and their families so many fun & precious memories over the last 18 years.

Race4Life provides palliative care patients with a day of exhilarating rides in all kinds of fast and furious vehicles, once a year at Hampton Downs Raceway. It's a day where illness takes a back seat to fun and adventure, and where everyone who attends leaves the raceway smiling ear to ear. This year's 29 Sept event was the last. We took 10 of our Day Programme patients & they had blast:

“Thank you to everyone concerned… had a ball. I did a Harley ride, a huge truck ride, a helicopter ride, and a fast 6 laps in a mustang. Very awesome."

"That was an incredible feat of love, caring, generosity and human spirit and kindness at its best.”

Pub Charity Limited has supported us for 24 years, & in that time given an incredible $6.4 million to fund Harbour Hospice services. This month we gratefully received a grant of $100,000, which will help cover operating costs across our service and ensure that the 450 people in our care at any given time will receive the compassionate, specialist care that they need, when they need it most, at no cost to them.
