Ever wondered how strong you actually are?

Can you guess who had the stronger grip strength? Sam or Sam? (Swipe for a bonus photo of Sam vR putting in his best effort!).

We use a muscle meter to measure how much force your muscles can produce - giving us a clear, objective reading (in kg).

It helps us:
• Compare side to side after an injury
• Track progress over time
• See how you measure up against expected levels for your age

It’s a simple way to take the guesswork out of rehab.

In the clinic, we’ll often use it alongside your assessment to guide your rehab and give you clear targets to work towards.

Do you need to keep a perfectly straight back when deadlifting? 🤔

It seems to be a commonly held belief that anything but perfect posture when deadlifting is dangerous.

A review this year by Cherni et al, - sets out some reasoning as to why this may not be as important as you think.

I would highly suggest this as a great read if you’re a fan of the classic deadlift ⬇️

Trigger Point Dry Needling involves short, targeted needling into dysfunctional tissues to help improve or restore function.

It can be a really useful addition to your recovery plan, particularly when an injury hasn't been improving as quickly as expected.

We've found it especially effective for stubborn shoulder and rotator cuff pain that just won't budge with other treatment alone.

It's not for everyone, and that's completely okay, but if you're curious whether it could help you, we're happy to chat.

Book in with us at Richmond Physiotherapy and we'll find the right approach for you. https://www.richmondphysio.co.nz/book-online

Hi, I'm Sam - or "the other Sam" - at Richmond Physiotherapy!

Growing up in a family with a strong background in healthcare, physiotherapy felt like a natural path for me. It's given me the chance to combine what I love most: helping people, understanding how the body works, and solving problems.

I take a logical, evidence-based approach to treatment and stay up to date with the latest research so I can provide the best possible care for every patient.

What keeps me passionate about this profession is the opportunity to help people get back to doing the things that matter most to them. Every person is different, and I genuinely enjoy working alongside my patients to understand what's important to them — and helping them get there.

Outside of work, you'll find me looking after my three daughters. And if I ever get a spare minute, I'm either at the gym or wandering around somewhere in the middle of nowhere, looking for a deer.

Whether you're recovering from surgery, managing a long-term injury, or working through chronic pain, the research is clear: meaningful improvement often continues for months after treatment begins. Progress happens in layers. Some weeks you'll feel it. Other weeks you won't. Both are part of the process.

So if you're somewhere in the middle of your recovery and wondering if you're on track, the answer is probably yes.

And if you're not sure, that's exactly what we're here for. No GP referral needed and you'll enjoy a longer appointment time to make sure we cover everything.

Spending a lot of time at your desk?

A few simple stretches through the day can help reduce stiffness and keep you moving well. Here are two we often recommend:

1. Tap Squats
Great for getting blood flowing generally, and often helpful for back and hip pain.

• Squat down to your chair, but tap your buttocks, don't sit
• Ideally arms folded, and minimum 5 reps- more like 15

2. Neck Extension
Often helpful for tightness or acheyness around neck - and sometimes even helps the shoulders.

• Sit upright, upper back supported.
• Tip head all the way back
• Mild pain okay, especially if it eases
• Stop if pain is increasing

Aim for 10 gentle reps, a few times a day.

Knee or hip injury from winter sport?

The right management starts with an accurate assessment. From there, we can guide your rehab and, if needed, arrange appropriate imaging to get a clearer picture of what’s going on. If you need a specialist referral or think you do, we can talk you through your options.

The goal is simple - get you back to moving well, with a plan that’s specific to you.
