A beautiful session with Nala.
I've got to be honest—cats are tough creatures to crack in the world of Contact Care, and I'm not a Cat Whisperer. 😄 When I'm asked to see one, I'm always curious to see how the session will unfold. Recently I've actually seen more cats than dogs, and every session has looked completely different.
Nala was found as a stray kitten and welcomed into a loving home. Her family asked me to come and support her to grow into a happy, healthy cat.
When I first met her, she was playful, curious, and understandably wary of this stranger taking such an interest in her. We tried a few different ways of approaching and holding her, always guided by her behaviour and what she was telling us she felt comfortable with. Each time, she'd gently wriggle away. She simply wasn't ready to trust me. This isn't unusual with cats!
Then her owner suggested something.
"If I lie on the sofa, she might come and lie on me."
He did... and she did.
She curled up on his chest and rested her head right in the middle of him.
With one hand supporting her owner's upper back, I gently rested my other hand over Nala's head, allowing her to settle into the safety she already felt with her human. Rather than separating them, we worked together.
Her eyes slowly closed.
Her whole body softened.
She completely relaxed.
A little later, as I rested a hand over her shoulder while continuing to support her owner, she gently pressed her head into the space between our hands. It was a lovely moment to witness.
Sessions like this remind me that the best support isn't always what I first assume a client needs. It's about listening, observing, offering different possibilities, and watching the responses... until something just clicks.
When Nala had, had enough, she simply sat up, gave herself a good groom, and wandered down to lie beside her owner's legs.
A perfect ending to a very special session. ❤️
