Manawa Honey NZ - Manuka & Wild Forest Honey Production Specialist

Manawa Honey NZ - Manuka & Wild Forest Honey Production Specialist We produce world award-winning Mānuka, Rewarewa and other wild forest honeys from Te Urewera forest. Manawa means Heart. Manawa - Honey From The Heart…

We’re based in Ruatahuna, Te Manawa-o-Te-Ika, The Heart of Māui’s Fish, which was pulled up by our ancestor Māui eons ago, and is now the North Island of New Zealand. A special place that produces special honeys. Manawa Honey NZ was founded by the Tuhoe Tuawhenua Trust which aims to sustainably manage the land and resources of our region for the benefit of current and future generations. We initia

ted our honey business to sustain our people with jobs and good health, and to keep bees for what they do for our place and this planet. We started keeping bees in 2011 and have slowly built our business over these years focusing on developing our people in the jobs that we have created in our integrated operation from ‘land to brand’, from beekeeping to marketing. Meaningful jobs in a business big enough to give our people real careers. We specialise in producing exquisite wild forest honeys from the vast pristine forests of Te Urewera – homeland of our tribe Tūhoe. Our varietals are: magical Mānuka, top-tasting Rewarewa, and rare Tāwari. Then there’s our unique Pua-ā-Tāne - bounty of the god of the forest. Our honeys are collected from remote parts of untouched indigenous rainforest that surrounds us. Our location and forest is the perfect home for keeping bees and producing 100% pure and natural honey. Our honeys are of the finest quality and are now proven award winners. Our Rewarewa Honey gained the Grand First Prize in the 10th Black Jar International Honey Tasting Contest in 2021 so is now deemed the “Best Tasting Honey in the World!” Our Tāwari and Pua-ā-Tāne Honeys made the final 30 of the hundreds of entries from across the world in this contest. Our Mānuka Honey and Tāwari Honey won Gold medals in the 2021 NZ Outstanding Food Producers Awards. So we comfortably claim our honeys are simply the best in taste and purity, and brimming with health-giving properties. Our honey varietals, especially Mānuka and Rewarewa, are also renowned for their properties – antibiotic, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. A bonanza of health benefits for our customers. Our product range puts our honey varietals into 500g, 250g and 110g jars, gift-packs and large pails. We also offer the PUHI Skincare range - Mānuka Honey and Oil based soap and balm, with healing and anti-ageing benefits for the skin. For honey–lovers in New Zealand and across the globe.

We’ve been quiet on social media. Can’t quite bring ourselves to do a post about honey when we have lost someone who was so important to our very being.

Mākere was behind everything that we have built with Manawa Honey and the Tuawhenua Trust, not just over the years, but over the decades.

Mākere was there when we fought for the lands of the Tuawhenua in the 1970s and 1980s. She was the secretarial engine for all of that endeavour that gave all of the lands of the Tuawhenua back to the owners through a claim to the High Court, well before claims to the Waitangi Tribunal were even thought of.

Makere then assisted the Tuawhenua Trust which was formed by 25 of the land blocks about Ruatahuna, through her support as secretary and hostess for the Trust's meetings and visitors in the 1990s and 2000s.

When her husband Wharekiri Biddle died in 2004, she stepped away from her active secretarial role, but never wavered in her support. She was after all an integral part of the legacy crafted by her husband Wharekiri Biddle and his uncle Hikawera Te Kurapa. Her heart was always with the kaupapa.

Makere hosted Tuawhenua board and research meetings, catering with unforgettable meals and refreshments, and offered her help in everything we did. Even at age 89 she made the trifles for our celebrations, peeled apples for preserves for the Matariki Hamper and processed peaches all day with her mates so that we could have a supply of preserves for the marae and the Matariki hampers.

She was our go-to for the komaka (sorting) of the taewa from our maara. Just this year, when near 90, I suggested to Mākere we put the taewa on a table so she would be comfortable sorting them, but she insisted that she sit on the ground just like she had always done, and y’know, if y’know, that this is how komaka should always be done – nestled on Papatuanuku not in a chair. No question, we do it just as you want it Makere!

So here she is in her happy place, in the open, active, productive, connected, supporting and loving - oh and beautiful as always.

Aue taukuri e, ka ngau tonu te mamae, te pouri. Moe mai Mākere, kua tae koe ki a rātau mā kai tua o te ārai. Kaare koe e warewarehia – tō kaha tautoko i ngā mahi katoa o te Tuawhenua me Manawa Mīere, mai te hīmatanga i te wā i a Hikawera, i a Tangitawhiti, i a Tīkina mā, tae noa ki to pakeketanga, ki ō rā whakamutunga i waenganui i a mātau.

🐝 Happy National Honey Bee Day! 🍯

Today, we're celebrating the tiny workers behind every jar of Manawa Honey.
From the native forests of Te Urewera, our bees forage among the blossoms of mānuka, kānuka, rewarewa and tāwari, collecting the nectar that nature transforms into the rich, distinctive honeys we love.

Every spoonful is a reminder of the incredible work these small pollinators do—not only for honey production, but for the health of our forests and ecosystems.

At Manawa Honey, we're proud to care for our bees through sustainable beekeeping, working alongside nature and respecting the ngahere that provides for them.
So today, let's take a moment to appreciate the bees. Their mahi is small in size, but enormous in impact. 💛

🍯 Happy National Honey Bee Day from all of us at Manawa Honey.
