Kia ora and welcome to the new followers.

I spent 30+ years as a St John volunteer, reaching pre‑degree paramedic level, but did not go down the registration road and eventually stepped away from frontline work. I later worked as an EMT at sport and community events. Over time I saw a gap: many events don’t need a full paramedic team, but they do need visible, community‑focused health support.

Using high‑level emergency medical staff at low‑risk events isn’t always the best use of their skills or resources. Those teams are often needed elsewhere, and at smaller events they can end up positioned out of sight, away from the people who actually need support.

That’s why I created Great Life — a health hub that’s easy to find, fully equipped, and staffed by competent, experienced first aiders who know how to assess, triage, and support people properly. We offer shade, water, sunscreen, health checks, phone charging, and emergency Wi‑Fi. We’re here to support everyone onsite and link with emergency services when needed.

Our new Mindray C1A AED has officially arrived, and it’s now part of our event medical kit.

This unit gives us fast shock delivery, clear voice prompts, and reliable performance in those rare but critical cardiac emergencies. For the events and communities we support, it means:

I’m feel like a kid at Christmas. I've managed to secure a new (well… ex‑demo) EDAN iM50 patient monitor for our medic kit. These units are normally way out of reach for small providers, and this particular model is about to disappear from the market altogether — so getting hold of one feels Christmas. I am working in Christchurch this week and my wife is going to be sick of me texting "Is it there yet"

This monitor means we can now run ECGs, track vital signs with far greater accuracy, and make better decisions while caring for patients as we wait for an ambulance. It also supports AED integration and gives us a clearer picture in those rare but critical cardiac situations.

For the events and communities we support, this upgrade means:

Safer, more informed patient care

Faster assessment in complex situations

Better support when multiple things are happening at once

It’s a big step forward for our capability, and I’m genuinely excited about what it means for the service we provide.

This was Yesterday’s Squash semi finals. I don’t get to see much but what I managed to see was fantastic competition and sportsmanship. The finals are due to start in 5 minutes. As always the Issac Thearter Royal is a great place work, great atmosphere and great people

After 30 years on the front line of ambulance and event work, I’ve seen how health provision at community events has shifted. Paramedics and EMTs are outstanding — but their level of care is rarely needed at local gatherings or low risk sports. What’s often missing is accessible, high-quality first aid: the kind that meets real needs affordably, while still being ready to scale up in a serious emergency.

That’s what we provide.

Working with sports clubs and community groups, I saw how tight budgets are. So when I discovered how much quality gear I could source from wholesalers, we started selling it — at fair prices, with over 15% of every sale going into our community fund.

That fund supports su***de prevention in Canterbury, and helps clubs and NGOs raise money for medical cover and community projects.

I have worked two additional days this weekend. Subcontracted by other companies. I am really looking forward to working directly with more of my own clients. I am reinvesting the funds into my health hub and today have purchased a large bottle of sunscreen. It is great to see people using it. I am living my dream and doing my best to help others have a Great Life.
