Our final match against the Marlborough Cavaliers wasโas Country rugby so often seems to beโa game of two halves.
Country struggled to โget off the bus,โ and the Cavaliers made us pay with two tries inside the opening ten minutes.
But our boys settled, fought their way into the contest and began to find their rhythm. An unfortunate intercept just before halftime stretched the Cavaliersโ lead and sent Country into the break trailing 21โ12.
Then came the response.
Country heart. Country grit. Country determination. And, most importantly, the brotherhood that has defined this group throughout the season.
The boys clawed their way back to 21โ19 and turned the match into a genuine contest. The Cavaliers eventually found one final try to secure a 28โ19 victoryโbut the scoreline does not tell the full story of what our boys gave.
They played through sprig scrapes, cuts, contact injuries and even boots disintegrating beneath themโone player finishing the job in the medic's pair.
Nothing came easily, but nobody looked for an easy way out.
That is Country rugby.
It is players turning up after a full week of work. It is long drives, borrowed gear and battered bodies. It is pride in your club, loyalty to your mates and the privilege of representing the communities that helped make you.
Congratulations to the Cavaliers. You were outstanding hosts, worthy opponents and part of a match that was everything representative rugby should be.
To our Country players, coaches and managersโthank you for everything you gave to this team.
To the playersโ familiesโthank you for sharing your people with Country rugby and for quietly carrying so much of the commitment that made this season possible.
And to everyone behind the scenesโthe officials, administrators, photographers, volunteers, ground staff, supporters and wider crewโthis season could not have happened without you.
A huge thank you to everyone at ๐ช๐ฎ๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฎ, ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ and ๐ฅ๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฎ who welcomed us, prepared the grounds and helped bring each match to life, and to the ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ฑ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฒ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ staff and crew for hosting our final game.
To every person who travelled, stood on a sideline, filled a seat, shared a post, sent a message or made some noise for our boysโthank you. You made sure the team knew that Country was with them.
Working alongside this group throughout 2026 has been a genuine privilege.
Together, they retained the Town & Country Cup and then stood toe-to-toe with two formidable representative teams. Pasifika and the Cavaliers were made to fight for every metre, every point and every moment.
But this season will be remembered for far more than its results.
It will be remembered for a group of men who trusted one another, stood together when matches turned against them and wore the Country jersey with enormous pride.
Our commitment to these players and to Country rugby does not finish with the final whistle.
For now, rest. Recover. Let the bruises settle, give those bodies the care they have earnedโand perhaps find some boots capable of surviving another season.
Enjoy the off-season, lads.
It has been an honour to stand beside you, and we cannot wait to meet you back on the paddock in 2027.
