TE TAIOPENGA 2026 | TE RĀ TUARUA

Another beautiful day down at Te Taiopenga 2026!

Te Rā Tuarua brought plenty of whānau through our space, lots of kōrero, laughs, whanaungatanga and some awesome moments captured at our Te Whāriki Aroha Photo Booth.

Now whānau, we need YOUR help…

❤️ LOVE HEART YOUR FAVOURITE PHOTO FROM OUR TE WHĀRIKI AROHA PHOTO BOOTH! ❤️

Have a look through the photos, pick your favourite and give it a LOVE HEART — we want to see which photo takes out the whānau favourite!

We also had the privilege of presenting our hampers to today’s winners, DOT HENRY and LAKE EDWARDS . A big mihi to you both! It was beautiful being able to acknowledge our whānau and share a little something back with those engaging with us throughout Te Taiopenga.

And whānau… we’re not finished yet!

We still have TWO MORE DAYS and TWO MORE HAMPERS up for grabs.

Come down āpōpō, have a nosey, connect with our Te Whāriki Aroha Collective and make sure you fill out one of our passports to get amongst the kaupapa.

We may even have a few cheeky little side prizes popping up here and there too, so you’ll have to come down and see us to find out!

Another awesome day connecting kanohi ki te kanohi with our whānau and hapori.

See you all āpōpō, whānau mā!

TE TAIOPENGA 2026 | TE RĀ TUATAHI

What a way to kick off the first day of Te Taiopenga 2026!

A beautiful start to what is going to be a full week of kaupapa, whanaungatanga, connection and celebration within our hapori.

A special mihi to Kimi for giving our whānau a little glimpse into Te Hapori Ora and capturing some of what our village is about. We appreciate you!

Throughout this week, our Te Whāriki Aroha Collective will be based down at Te Taiopenga:

Te Hapori Ora
Tūwharetoa Health
Te Korowai Rōpū Tautoko
Te Whare Oranga Wairua

This week is about more than simply being present — it is an opportunity for our whānau to come and connect, have some whanaungatanga with us, learn more about the mahi happening across our hapori and discover the different services and pathways available to support our whānau.

Sometimes it is about putting a face to the name — and for some of us, putting the name to the face!

We have our Te Whāriki Aroha Passports available throughout the week, giving whānau an opportunity to engage in the different kaupapa across our collective. There will also be hampers and giveaways throughout the week, so make sure you come over, grab yourself a passport, get amongst it and have a kōrero with us.

Te Hapori Ora will also be sharing information about our upcoming kaupapa and Wānanga spaces so our whānau know what is available, what is coming up and how they can become involved within our village.

Te Taiopenga gives us another opportunity to celebrate our people, strengthen our connections and make sure our whānau know that support, kaupapa and spaces of oranga are right here within our own hapori.

Te Rā Tuatahi — kua oti!
Day One down, and we will be here all week!

If you see the Te Whāriki Aroha Collective, come over, say kia ora, grab a passport and have some whanaungatanga with us.

Mauri Ora e te whānau!

POD ACTIVATIONS POSTPONED

Kia ora e te whānau,

Due to Taiopenga, all activations at The POD are postponed until Tuesday 22 September, when our normal timetable will resume.

Taiopenga is an important opportunity to strengthen whakapapa, whanaungatanga and collective wellbeing through kaupapa Māori. We acknowledge and support all the whānau, kura, kaiako and tauira involved, and wish everyone attending an amazing
week
Kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui ki a koutou katoa. We look forward to reconnecting with our hapori next Tuesday. 💜

Ngā mihi nui,

Te Hapori Ora

TAIOHI ORA | MANAAKITANGA THROUGH KAI

Yesterday our Taiohi Ora kaupapa looked a little different as we explored Manaakitanga through Kai with our rangatahi.

This was definitely something new for some of our rangatahi, but it was awesome seeing everyone get involved, work together and get stuck into the kitchen! Each rōpū had the opportunity to bid for one of three kai options:

• Loaded Nachos
• Chicken Teriyaki Sliders
• Loaded Fries

And safe to say… our rangatahi absolutely blew our judges away! The kai looked amazing, the teamwork was awesome to watch, and there was plenty of learning happening along the way.

A huge mihi to Whaea Aylah, Whaea Ashleigh and Whaea Tiara for giving up your time to be our judges and support our rangatahi throughout the afternoon.

We also want to acknowledge our parents and whānau who kindly koha’d cooking utensils and equipment to help make this kaupapa possible. We really appreciate everyone who put their hand up to help. It takes a village, and yesterday was another beautiful example of that.

Our rangatahi did an amazing job, and hopefully the skills and confidence they gained don’t stop in our Taiohi Ora space — we hope to see some of them getting into the kitchen at home and continuing to practise their cooking!

IMPORTANT TAIOHI ORA UPDATE

There will be no Taiohi Ora next week as we will be supporting Taiopenga, where we get the opportunity to watch our rangatahi compete, represent and perform.

Our following wānanga will then be our FINAL Taiohi Ora for Term 3 on Friday 25 September, located down at the POD.

We would love to invite our parents and whānau to come down and celebrate the end of Term 3 alongside our rangatahi, reflect on what they have achieved and finish another awesome term together.

Nau mai, haere mai e te whānau!

END OF LIFE CONVERSATIONS

Kia ora whānau — we're excited to introduce you to Arusha and the kaupapa she fronts, End of Life Conversations.

It's a kaupapa about having the kōrero before it's needed. About making sure the people we love aren't left guessing. Arusha and her team have been quietly building this mahi in Taupō, and this month we're proud to host them at Te Whāriki Aroha.

Over to Arusha and Belinda:

Thank you to those who attended our lively August Conversation, where Howard Rogers of No Bull Technology gave us an informative overview of the key things to consider when dealing with a digital legacy.

It's a big and important topic, so this month we're following on by focusing on a few practical areas where you can begin taking your next steps:

• Storing your photos
• Choosing your legacy contacts
• Knowing what needs paying

There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and learn from one another.

Please note we have a change of venue this month. We're pleased to be partnering with Te Hapori Ora — The Village of Wellbeing.

📅 Wednesday 16 September
🕑 2.00pm – 3.30pm
📍 Te Whāriki Aroha, 80 Tūwharetoa Street, Taupō

We look forward to having you join us.

Ngā mihi

Connection isn’t built by big moments. It’s built by boring ones.

Every few days I send my moko a video. He’s three. He lives in Australia. I say good morning, show him what I’m up to, and send it. His mum sends one back. That’s the whole system.

It’s not clever. That’s the point.

The research on little kids is unambiguous: what wires a child’s brain for connection isn’t the special occasion. It’s the small back-and-forth, repeated thousands of times. Serve and return. He won’t remember a single one of these videos. He’ll remember that Koro was always there.

Our tūpuna knew this without needing the study. Karakia every morning. The same waiata, the same kōrero, the same faces. Whakawhanaungatanga was never a feeling you had — it was a thing you did, on schedule, whether you felt like it or not.

Which brings me to this morning’s video. 6am. Dance Fit at Misfitz Dance Studio. Stacey - our facilitator up the front, our hapori moving together in the dark.

Same technology.

Moving in time with other people does something exercise alone doesn’t — it releases more endorphins and it bonds people. Your body reads it as “these are my people.” And the strength of your social connection turns out to be one of the best predictors we have of how long you’ll live. Not a soft factor. A survival one.

So no, a 6am class isn’t about fitness. It’s whakawhanaungatanga with a heart rate.

Whānau, hapū, iwi — none of it is built in the big hui. It’s built at 6am on a Wednesday when nobody’s watching.

Kia ora Stacey. Kia ora te hapori.

TE HAPORI ORA – TUESDAY HIGHLIGHTS

What an awesome Tuesday across our Te Hapori Ora spaces, with plenty of whanaungatanga, learning, movement and connection happening throughout our hāpori.

ADULT LEARNING WEEK – TAUPŌ REAP

Today we had the privilege of being welcomed into the Taupō REAP Centre as part of Adult Learning Week.

We want to acknowledge the REAP team for opening your doors and welcoming us back into your space. There is some special whakapapa here for Te Hapori Ora, as REAP was where our Wāhine Ora and Tāne Ora Wānanga spaces first began, alongside the amazing team who supported and believed in these kaupapa from the beginning.

So to be able to return today and share some of our own mātauranga and activations felt like a beautiful full-circle moment.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou, and the wider REAP whānau. We acknowledge the contribution you have made to our journey and thank you for continuing to create spaces where adult learning, connection and growth can thrive.

Today we had the opportunity to take everyone through “Ko Te Pū” and our Rākau Ora Activation — creating an opportunity to whakapiki ora, to uplift ourselves through movement, connection, whakaaro and collective energy.

THE POD WAS PUMPING!

Back at our POD space, we had another awesome turnout from our whānau, and our tamariki definitely brought the energy!

Before our Club Fit and Kettle Club activations kicked off, our tamariki got amongst some Tag, had a kanikani and simply enjoyed being active together. We love seeing our tamariki included in these spaces and watching our whānau move alongside one another.

A special mihi also goes out to our Tuakana, Mel and Tiara. It was beautiful welcoming you both back into our space today. Mel has recently returned home from Australia, while Tiara is back with us after recovering from a recent illness. Nau mai, hoki mai kōrua — it was awesome having your presence and energy back amongst the whānau.

And we’re only getting started for the week!

Tuesday – Club Fit | 3:30pm–4:30pm
Wednesday – Dance Fit | 6:00am–7:00am
Thursday – Box Fit | 3:30pm–4:30pm

Nau mai, haere mai e te whānau.

You don’t have to be the fittest, fastest or strongest. Just come as you are, move your tinana, have a laugh, connect with our whānau and do something positive for your own oranga.

Whakapiki ora — uplifting ourselves, uplifting each other, and continuing to move together as a village.

Mauri Ora!

Morning Insights — Plot Twists

Small numbers on the floor this morning. A few of our whānau are at a tangi. Some are caring for their people. Others are laid low by the flu doing the rounds of our community. And your fearless BMAN (ok, perhaps not that fearless) is nursing an injury (the body sends memos, apparently).

I mentioned to Stacey, our facilitator, that our community has been navigating a challenging week.

She smiled and said: “Oh! We call those moments — Plot Twists.”

I loved it.

Because a plot twist isn’t the end of the story. It’s the part where the story gets interesting. Nobody remembers the chapters where everything went to plan. What we remember is how people carried themselves when the script changed — who showed up, who held the space, who kept the music playing.

Life doesn’t hand us a straight line. It hands us tangi, illness, injury, old excuses we can’t seem to let go of. And every single time, there’s a next page. There’s always a way through.

So to those away today — kia kaha, we’ve got your spot. To those who made it in — you danced for the ones who couldn’t.

New day tomorrow. The story continues.
