Perimenopause.
I'm in it. And here's what I'm noticing: it's a heck of a lot more similar to puberty than I was expecting. How so, you ask? Let me tell you.
Mood
It's like a roller coaster of emotion over here. But the most common state is annoyed.
Hair & skin
Not since age 12 have I had so many new and unwanted hairs on my body. My head of hair is also changing, going from 3B to 3C like a badly grown out relaxer. Also, I've never understood why we have to have acne AND wrinkles. Surely we can trade in the zits for the crow's feet?
Periods
In the last 2 years, I have had 6 periods. Some have been 2 weeks apart, others 6 months apart. Some have been mild, while others have been excruciating and debilitating, with massive blood loss despite being on Mirena. Still getting pms every 4 weeks though, so...
It's not all bad, though. And here's what I want to stress: when I was 9-16, I had zero autonomy, no ability to control my life or environment. I had essentially no money or resources. And everything felt eternal and monumental.
With 30 years of life experience since then, I am confident this is temporary. I have autonomy. I have choices. I have resources. I know I'm strong and brave and capable. This, too, shall pass.
How are you handling this time of life? What are you noticing? What gives you hope?
Love you! Xx, j
