Manawa—Off Track
✧ Episode 02 ✧

We recorded our most recent Manwa Nights—Virtual Series so we could share it with more of your ear holes!

This time we call in to the mighty Southland to speak with Kristina Placko. Kristina is the founder and guide behind Stray South Outfitters NZ—she is a ray of sunshine and a legend in the South Island rivers.

After a lifetime of fishing she found her passion in the casting and angling of fly fishing for the beautiful trout. Listen in as we chat about what gets her reel spinning, our shared passion of getting wāhine into the outdoors, and a little about our upcoming event in November!

A Poem–

Where We Find Ourselves

The mountains ask one thing.
The sea, another.

Between them
lies a lifetime of ways
to lose yourself,
and quietly return.

Some days are measured in footsteps,
some in tides,
some in the single breath
before everything comes together.

The reward is rarely the summit,
the cast,
the shot,
or the catch.

It is the person who arrives there.

A little steadier.
A little quieter.
A little more certain
that enough has always lived
within their own two hands.

Then daylight slips away.

Boots by the door.
Salt on your skin.
Smoke in your clothes.

A cold beer catches the last of the light,

and for a moment,

the world feels exactly
as it should.

This has been brewing for a little while. What started as a conversation has blossomed into a reality. Laura and I are very proud to introduce our new podcast.

Stories of those walking their own path into adventure and the outdoors

Episode 01
Before we dive into conversations with inspiring guests, we thought we'd start by introducing ourselves and sharing a little about the journeys that brought us here.

In this episode, we talk about our own connections to the outdoors, what time in nature has taught us, and the experiences that have shaped who we are today. We share how our paths crossed, why we believe creating spaces like Manawa is so important, and what inspired us to start this podcast.

Whether you're an experienced outdoors person or just beginning your journey, we hope these conversations encourage you to step outside your comfort zone, embrace new experiences, and discover what's possible when you choose your own path.

This time last year I had just been on a bucket list hunt with some excellent humans and a couple of cameras 😳. In March, the Episode was aired, and it was pretty surreal to relive the whole experience.

If you haven't seen it, it's available on TVNZ+, Season 12. Ep 05.

With every adventure I head on, I make sure I journal each night (or at least the next day), to remember the feelings and experiences—all the little things that time washes away. I've compiled my honest notes from this trip as well. You can read it over on the blog—Link in bio!

Ka mua, ka muri. Walking backwards into the future.

It might be my age and stage of life, or it might be something else entirely, but every year that goes by I find myself needing the winter season more and more. I find myself naturally following its rhythm—using this time to slow down, reflect, restore, and begin planning for what lies ahead.

For me, Matariki has become a marker of true reflection. Not just on the year that's been or where I'm sitting with my goals, but on how I arrived here in the first place. It's a chance to acknowledge my whakapapa, to remember the people who have shaped me, and to recognise the constant nudges from my tīpuna (ancestors) encouraging me to stay on my own path—even when it leads away from what might be considered the norm.

I've written a little more about these reflections in a newsletter to the Manawa tribe of subscribers. With some very special announcements close to my heart. If you'd like to read it, then DM me or head to our website to subscribe. Perhaps it will spark something in you too?

I wish you all a safe and prosperous season ahead, and I can't wait to share more Manawa goodness with you all.
