For many in our community, a walk up Mauao is more than just exercise—it’s a daily ritual, a chance to reset, and one of the best ways to start or finish the day. We know its closure has been felt for many.
This striking mural is a reminder that Mauao is more than just a place to walk or exercise. It is a place of deep cultural significance, reflecting values of whakapapa (connection to people and place) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land).
While the walking tracks remain closed, it’s an opportunity to appreciate its beauty from afar and allow the maunga time to recover.
In the meantime, why not explore some of our favourite local walks?
• Te Puna Quarry Park – A hidden gem right on our doorstep, with beautifully landscaped gardens, native bush, sculptures and plenty of hills to challenge you.
• Pāpāmoa Hills Regional Park – A rewarding climb through a culturally significant landscape with breathtaking views across Tauranga Moana.
• McLaren Falls Park – Peaceful bush tracks, waterfalls and lakeside trails, perfect for a slower-paced adventure.
Walking on varied terrain and gradients does more than provide a great view. Hills naturally increase your heart rate to improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen your glutes, calves and quadriceps, challenge your balance, and help build the strength and endurance needed for everyday life.
Every walk offers something different, but they all remind us how fortunate we are to call the Bay of Plenty home.
