Why was my fracture not picked up on X ray?

Occasionally some fractures are not “picked up” on the initial X Ray.

This is not because of medical error, although this can sometimes occur, it is most often because that they are not visible on the initial X ray.

The fracture may not be displaced (that is the fractured bones were still all in alignment) or the fracture line was not evident. Repeat X Rays taken a few weeks later may show some clues of a break as there will be signs of healing around the fracture (known as callus formation), or by that stage some displacement may have occurred which is then visible.

This is well understood and if there is a strong clinical suspicion of a fracture, the injured part may be immobilized for a few weeks. Experienced clinicians can recognise when further X rays are indicated, or in more urgent cases specialist review and MRI or CT scan may be arranged. Do check in with your doctor or physiotherapist if you are still having significant symptoms that are not improving several weeks after any “clear” X Ray. They can advise if repeat X Ray or further imaging or specialist review may be required.

If the New Zealand Government’s Cancer outcome, “that New Zealanders have better cancer survival, by living well with and beyond cancer”, is to be achieved, cancer rehabilitation must be accessible to all, and now!
