Keeping your whānau well

While you can’t completely avoid winter illnesses, you can give your whānau the best chance of staying well by:

Washing your hands regularly
Teaching children to cough and sneeze into elbows
Keeping sick children at home
Keeping bedrooms warm and dry
Opening windows regularly to ventilate
Drinking plenty of water and eating nutritious food
Staying up to date with immunisations such as flu, Covid, RSV, and other immunisations listed on the national immunisation schedule.

When to get medical help

It’s best to book an appointment with your child’s GP or NP if they are:
*Breathing faster than usual
*Not drinking well
*Urinating less or having fewer wet nappies
*Unusually sleepy or difficult to wake
*Running a high fever that isn’t settling
*Getting worse instead of better

Babies and very young children can deteriorate quickly, so it is always worth seeking advice early if you are concerned or unsure, please contact us anyway so we can guide you on the next best step. If your child is struggling to breathe, becoming floppy or unresponsive, or you feel it is an emergency, don’t wait — call 111.

When to keep your child home from school or daycare

It’s usually okay for children to attend school or childcare if they have only mild symptoms, such as a mild runny nose, mild cough, hay fever symptoms, and seem otherwise well with good energy and are eating and drinking normally.

Keep them home if they have:

*A fever of 38°C or higher
*Vomiting or diarrhoea
*Trouble breathing
*Fatigue or low energy
*Infectious blisters/rashes
*Symptoms severe enough that they cannot comfortably participate in school activities.

We held our 4th annual wellness day on 2 May

Gain Health Centre, Orongomai Marae, and Unichem Upper Hutt worked together to provide the Upper Hutt community with a free Health Service Day on 2 May 2026 at Orongomai Marae. This marked our fourth Rā Whakahauora – Wellness Day.

By working together, we were able to provide accessible health services with no barriers for our community. Events like this are only possible because of the collective mahi and commitment from everyone involved.

The event continues to grow each year, with more agencies wanting to be involved. We are often thanked for creating opportunities for agencies to participate, but we are the ones who are truly grateful for the collaboration, support, and shared commitment to improving the wellbeing of our community.

More childhood illnesses to watch out for this winter

Gastroenteritis (Gastro) - causes vomiting, diarrhoea and sore tummies. This illness is common among tamariki at this time of year. The biggest risk with gastro is dehydration, especially in babies and toddlers. Signs your child may be becoming dehydrated include fewer wet nappies or toilet trips, dry lips, no tears when crying, or unusual sleepiness.

Offer small frequent sips of water, breastmilk, formula or electrolyte fluids.
If your baby is less than 6 months old and has diarrhoea or vomiting, see a GP urgently.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease - is a common viral illness which causes painful mouth ulcers, blisters on hands and feet, fever, and reduced appetite. While Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease looks unpleasant, it usually settles on its own within a few days. Keep offering your child fluids, and ensure your child is feeling well and their blisters have dried before sending them back to school or childcare.

Croup - Croup often starts like an ordinary cold before turning into a distinctive barking cough that can sound alarming, sometimes with noisy breathing. Croup symptoms are often worse at night or when children become upset. Sitting them upright, keeping them calm, and seeking urgent help if breathing becomes laboured is important.
