An update from John Vissers
Three weeks on:

Sitting in the space between resilience and surrender. The place where the smallest of actions feel huge. Raking the now cold embers off the dead lawns, a reclaiming of what is ours. Removing the roofing iron, all twisted, contorted and spread out all over the place, revealing the insignificance of what once was... Pushing over the last wall standing, as if betraying a loyal friend that had earned their place to stand.

We await the diggers to clear the burnt remains. A timeliness and system belonging to someone else, moving at its own pace...

Finding the baby Buddha, a sign it will all be OK. Seeing a baby broccoli 🥦 growing in a garden scorched to renewal. Gazing into the reflection of the water in the brazier (3 weeks ago boiling from the inferno) seeing the space and the blue skies.

Many in our community will be familiar with John Vissers Big Black Boar, an elder, brother and mentor to many, based in Whaingaroa Raglan with
his lovely wife Tracey Bonnington.

Early this week, they lost their cottage and workshop to a devastating fire (pictured).

Everyone (including pets) are safe, but alongside precious memories, irreplaceable belongings, and an entire cottage, John has lost his tools and a lifetime of work.

The road to rebuilding will be long, challenging, and even with insurance (tbc) - expensive.

Many men in the BROS community have sat around the fire here with John and know this place well. Many people have been impacted by John & Tracey’s work in the local Aotearoa community.

They have both shown up for so many of us. Now it’s our turn.

In the early hours on Monday 15 June, a fire took down John Vissers & Tracey Bonnington's Raglan cottage & workshop. In a matter of minutes, years of memories, belongings, tools, precious creations, and a place full of life were gone.

The loss is heavy, the cost is large, and the road to rebuilding is long.

Bringing together the BROS community in Auckland - we’re gathering at the time of Winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in the wilderness of West Auckland for an adventure immersed in nature & brotherhood.

Join us for a series of experiences designed to clear the mind, reinvigorate the body, and ground/connect you with the healing power of nature.

Facilitated by BROS co-founder Graedon Parker and the BROS Leadership community.

Sat 20th June 2026, 9am - 1pm

There’s a quiet crisis moving through men right now. This “crisis” can look simply like a man going to work.

Coming home.
Scrolling.
Sleeping.
Repeat.

It looks like “I’m good mate, just busy.”

It looks like a man who has hundreds of contacts in his phone and no one he could call at 11pm on a Tuesday when something inside him is breaking.

Most men today are leaning on one person for everything emotional - their partner.

And when that’s not enough, there’s nowhere to go.

So we go quiet.
We perform fine.
We perform strong.

But a man was not built to carry it alone.

The data on this is brutal. Men are 3-4 times more likely to die by su***de. The leading cause of death for men under 50 in many countries.

Most don’t see it coming.
Their mates don’t see it coming.
Their partners don’t see it coming.

Because he was performing strong right up until he couldn’t.

This is why brotherhood is medicine.

Not because circles fix you - they don’t.

But because something in a man begins to soften when another man nods and says “yeah, me too” - and means it.

Belonging is not a bonus. It’s a need. As primal as food, sleep, and movement.
