Incredible. - On the left you see a fully closed and thick cervix with mucus plug - prior to the onset labour. On the right you see a fully effaced and dilated cervix in labour. The image on the right also illustrates how contractions cause the upper part of the uterus (fundus) to tighten and thicken while the cervix and lower portion of the uterus stretch and relax, helping the baby pass from inside the uterus and into the birth canal for delivery.

Te Maramataka – Week Ahead | 24–30 August 2026
As we move through another week, take a moment to reconnect with the rhythms of Te Maramataka.

This week begins with Huna, a time to slow down, rest and conserve your energy. As we move through Mawharu, Atua and Turu, energy begins to rebuild—supporting reconnection, steady mahi and getting things done with care.

By Friday we reach Rākaunui, the full moon, bringing strong energy for productivity, whānau connection, gathering kai and being out in te taiao. The weekend carries that energy through Rākaumatohi, before Takirau Mahehaea guides us to begin winding down, clear what needs attention and prepare for the quieter energy ahead.

Te Maramataka is a guide that helps us align with the natural rhythms of Papatūānuku and Tangaroa—supporting the way we work, rest, care for our hauora and connect with te taiao.

He mihi nui ki a Papa Toa for generously sharing this mātauranga with our communities.

Kia mau ki te taiao, kia mau ki ngā tikanga.

As we head into RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) season, it’s important to remember how vulnerable babies and toddlers are to illnesses. Their immune systems are still developing, which means something that seems like a mild cold for an adult could lead to serious complications for them.

Even the smallest gestures, like kissing a baby’s forehead or holding their tiny hand, can unintentionally pass along germs that their little bodies can’t fight off as easily. This isn’t about being overly cautious or dramatic; it’s about being mindful and protective of those who can’t protect themselves.

If you see a sweet baby or toddler this season, share your love with smiles, kind words, and gentle interactions, but avoid kisses if they’re not your own child. This simple act of care can make all the difference. It’s not about you… it’s about protecting their health ♥️

Kia ora whānau! With cases of measles on the rise, there's no better time to make sure your whānau is immunised.

Measles is a serious and highly contagious illness that can affect adults as well as children. The best protection against measles is two doses of the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) immunisation. 🛡

Anyone who has not yet had two doses of the MMR vaccine is most at risk, especially pēpi and tamariki.

Tamariki can get their MMR at our pilot immunisation clinics - find the locations and how to book on our website: https://www.plunket.org.nz/plunket/what-we-offer/immunisation-services-pilot/
