"The advantage of the rapid antigen test (RAT) is that it's really convenient and you get the results really quickly, but its disadvantage is it's got a much higher false negative rate," Dr Moy said.

"That means you may get a test result, which comes back negative … but, in fact, you actually have COVID."

Rapid antigen tests are more likely to return false negatives than PCR tests, but experts say they are useful for identifying when a person is at their most infectious. So how can they be used in Australia?
