We had another sad goodbye at the Black Dog family last week to sweet Indy. ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜ข

We have created this post in remembrance of this gentle old man. Indy was 14 years young and struggling with a few difficult health issues, but he had wonderful success and made great progress with his fortnightly treatments with Sara.

Indy went from having to be encouraged into the tank with some tasty possyum to confidently walking in and being ready to go! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜ Sara was so impressed with his strength and enthusiasm growing with each session, and she will miss his happy waddle into the clinic, expecting to have his treats cut up and ready to go! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Sara is really going to miss seeing him! ๐Ÿ’”

Thank you, Phillip Chan and Ohmmar Chan , for taking such wonderful care of Indy and putting in all the time and effort to give him the best possible opportunity to live a comfortable and happy life โ€” one that was clearly filled with so much love, happiness and special memories. ๐Ÿ’–โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’•
Thank you for trusting the Black Dog Physio team to walk alongside him through his golden years. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’ซ

๐Ÿพ Myth Busting: Does My Pet Just Need "Rest" After an Injury?

When a furry family member gets hurt, our first instinct is to let them rest. While resting is super important, waiting until that rest period is completely over to start physiotherapy might mean missing a huge window for healing! ๐Ÿค”

Think of it this way: animal physiotherapy isn't just about exercises. Even when a pet is supposed to be taking it easy, a physiotherapist is already hard at work helping them behind the scenes.

Here are four ways physiotherapy helps your pet heal right from the start:

๐ŸŒŸGentle Muscle Relief: Manual therapies and soft tissue work keep muscles relaxed.

๐ŸŒŸPain Management: Special tools ( such as cold laser and physio techniques) help ease discomfort without extra stress.

๐ŸŒŸSmart Home Setup: Guidance on how to safely manage toilet breaks and slippery floors while your pet is healing.

๐ŸŒŸSafe Movement: Passive controlled movements that keep joints moving safely without risking re-injury.

๐ŸŒŸPhysiotherapy helps prevent pets from overloading their healthy legs while trying to protect their injured ones.

By starting early, we can manage pain, protect their movement, and help them recover faster. ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿš‘

We had to say a sad goodbye to beautiful Lacey a few weeks ago ๐Ÿ˜“ and we wanted to take the time and make a post in rememberance of her!๐Ÿ’”

Lacey had been attending her treatments fortnightly for over a year with Sara and over that time they created a special bond! Lacey would gallop in with excitement at each appointment๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ and bark at her if she took too long to get the tank door open! Sara will miss her and their time together dearly.๐Ÿ’•

Thank you Dane Williamson for all the support and love you have shown Lacey, she lived a wonderful life with you for 13 years. We are so grateful you entrusted our team to assist her in these special golden years, helping her feel more comfortable and mobile.

She will always be a special part of the Black Dog Physio Team. ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—

Love this story about Nella. Pre surgery rehab (prehab) is so important ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Meet Nella!

Nella the 4yo Shih Tzu X was referred by her vet for hydrotherapy as she had bilateral luxating patella, (which means both of her knee caps were unstable and popped out of alignment every so often). She often skipped along, lifting her hinds limbs as she walked. She was needing to undergo surgical repair. At this point, it was clear that Nella was quite overweight and so the suggestion was, for Nella to lose some of her much loved insulation and hit the gym! Obviously with dodgy knees, the exercise had to be low impact and supportive thatโ€™s where hydrotherapy came in.

Nellaโ€™s treat allocation got a complete overhaul and her family were well on board with making adjustments to how much Nella consumed and how she moved around in her environment. Pre-surgical, fortnightly hydrotherapy provided a chance to check in with her family, undertake a therapeutic hydro session and hop on the scales and within a few months, Nella had dropped 2kgs and was deemed fit for surgery.

Here's Nella at hydro - https://youtu.be/v4hx6-T5XKA

Thanks to hydrotherapy and the changes her family made, Nellaโ€™s surgery was a success. The pre-hab proved valuable for helping to build muscle and improve body condition and the post surgical rehab offered that slow, controlled movement which is so crucial for newly operated limbs. She still has a wee way to go with her recovery but needless to say, Nellaโ€™s family are committed to keeping the weight off and they are hopeful that with the strength she has built and the changes made to her exercise regime, they might be able to avoid a second surgery for Nella.

Great going Nella and fam! If you think hydrotherapy could be for your dog, reach out to www.nzach.co.nz for your closest clinic
