Gillies McIndoe Research Institute A biomedical research charity creating accessible treatments by repurposing medications to ease suffering from devastating conditions.

In our work, we test medications using spheroids and organoids. Your generous support makes this happen. The Gillies McIndoe Research Institute (GMRI) is seeking to achieve a paradigm shift in the way numerous diseases, including cancer, are treated. Our goal is to develop low cost and widely available treatments without the need for invasive and expensive surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.

Our research has already underpinned paradigm shifts in the treatments for deformational ear anomalies and strawberry birthmarks. These successes have won widespread recognition and are now used internationally. Now, we are applying our knowledge, understanding and innovation to address cancer, fibrotic conditions, vascular birthmarks and regenerative medicine.

We were delighted to welcome members of the Maunuhanga–Wellington Postdoctoral Society to the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute this week.

The Society brings postdoctoral and early career researchers together from across the region, helping them build relationships, exchange ideas and support one another as their careers develop.

While established researchers often have strong networks across research institutes, universities and other organisations, opportunities for early career researchers to form similar connections can be harder to find. Events like this create space for researchers to share their work, meet their peers and discover new possibilities for collaboration.

During the visit, we heard presentations from:

Dr Sam Siljee, who shared his findings on early changes in lung squamous cell cancer.

Dr Yonathan Lukito, who spoke about fungi and pharmaceuticals.

Dr Kaitlin Buick, who discussed her investigation into the role of type I interferon signalling in the immune response to mRNA-LNP vaccination.

Dr Jochem Vink, who presented on building capability and developing novel RNA technologies.

Our PhD students also gained a great deal from the presentations and the discussions that followed. It was a valuable opportunity to ask questions, explore the research in more detail and exchange perspectives with early career researchers.

The group also enjoyed a tour of our laboratories, where they were introduced to the facilities, research capabilities and expertise that support our work at the Institute.

We were pleased to hear that the rest of their Wellington research tour went well too. They visited Te Kāuru-The Ferrier Research Institute and the Paihau–Robinson Research Institute, making it a rewarding day of science, learning and connection across the region.

Thank you to our speakers and everyone who joined us. It was a pleasure to spend time with such a thoughtful and enthusiastic group of researchers.

☀️ Summer Studentship Opportunity at Gillies McIndoe Research Institute

Are you interested in pharmacology, public health, biomedical science or data analysis?

We are looking for a summer student to join Dr Shayma Faircloth and Dr Clint Gray for a 10-week research project investigating the real-world safety of propranolol for infantile haemangioma.

Pharmacovigilance is the science of detecting, assessing, understanding and preventing adverse events associated with medicines. In this project, the successful student will use large international health datasets to help characterise acute adverse events following propranolol use in infants and toddlers.

The studentship offers:

When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it doesn’t just affect that person. It affects their partner, their family, their whānau and the people who care about them. Much of that impact happens quietly, behind closed doors.

Clive’s wife, Susan, was diagnosed with glioblastoma. In this interview, Hip Hop Science asks them to share what day-to-day life during treatment can really be like.

Clive speaks honestly about how some days are harder than others. “When Susan’s on chemo, it can be a little bit tough,” he says. “She can get tired, and she can get a little grumpy sometimes, and it’s all part of it.”

There is humour in the exchange, but what comes through most strongly is Clive’s love for Susan.

Their openness shows how cancer can change far more than one person’s health. It can change family routines, expectations and plans, while bringing uncertainty into everyday life.

Hearing experiences like Susan and Clive’s reminds us why our research matters. When we look for new ways to treat glioblastoma, we are thinking not only about the patient, but also about their quality of life and the people living through it alongside them.

A vaccine that can prevent cancer

On World Head and Neck Cancer Day, Hon Brown MP , Minister of Health, hosted the launch of the Aotearoa HPV-related Cancer Prevention Roadmap: Achieving 90% Vaccination Coverage by 2030 at Parliament.

The Minister spoke about the importance of cancer prevention, vaccination and the need to reduce both the lives lost to HPV-related cancers and the significant economic burden they place on individuals, whānau and our health system.

The message is clear: Prevent more HPV-related cancers through vaccination and committing to lifting vaccination coverage from 60% to 90% by 2030.

Dr Hayley Denison presented findings from the recently published BMJ Public Health study examining the economic burden of HPV-related cancers in Aotearoa New Zealand:

“The cost of HPV-attributable cancers in NZ during 2019–2022 was conservatively estimated at NZ$131.4 million.”

Behind these figures are people, families and communities.

Maureen Tane and Doug Russell generously shared their lived experiences as survivors of head and neck cancer. Their stories highlighted the realities of diagnosis and treatment, and why improving access to HPV vaccination is so important. Their courage brought a deeply human perspective to the evening and reinforced the value of preventing cancer wherever we can.

Representatives of the Head and Neck Cancer Foundation Aotearoa included Dr Swee Tan, Dr Dean Ruske, Dr Sam Murton and Suzanne Giddens. Together, they presented a roadmap calling for:

• HPV vaccination to become a national priority
• a national target of 90% vaccination coverage by 2030
• stronger leadership, governance and accountability
• better access for people who have missed vaccination
• vaccination services designed to reach Māori and Pacific communities equitably
• stronger systems and service delivery
• greater public understanding of the HPV vaccine as a cancer-prevention vaccine

With vaccination coverage currently around 60%, reaching 90% will require coordinated action across government, healthcare, schools and communities.

The HPV vaccine is more than protection against a virus.

It is a vaccine that can prevent cancer.

Today is World Head and Neck Cancer Day.

Head and neck cancer can affect areas including the mouth, tongue, throat, voice box, nose, sinuses and salivary glands. Some early symptoms may resemble more common conditions, which means they can be easy to dismiss.

Our ambassador, Nick White, understands the lasting impact of head and neck cancer firsthand.

Nick was diagnosed in 2009 and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. He lost half his tongue and had to learn to speak again. A recurrence in 2021 required further major surgery, leaving Nick with additional difficulty speaking and unable to swallow food. Despite these ongoing challenges, Nick continues to run mountain races using liquid nutrition. He also supports other people affected by cancer, speaks openly about his experience and advocates for research into better treatments.

Nick’s story reminds us why awareness, timely assessment, rehabilitation, compassionate support and continued research all matter.

Common signs and symptoms can include:

• a lump or swelling in the neck
• a mouth ulcer that does not heal
• red or white patches inside the mouth
• a hoarse or changed voice
• a persistent sore throat
• difficulty or pain when swallowing
• unexplained ear pain
• numbness in the face, lips or tongue
• difficulty moving the jaw or tongue

These symptoms do not necessarily mean cancer. However, persistent, unusual or unexplained changes should not be ignored. Please speak with a GP, dentist or other health professional if something does not feel right or is not improving.

What does scientific data sound like?

On Friday, Sam spoke at the School of Biological Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington about an unexpected discovery he made while exploring proteomics data for his lung cancer research: mass spectrometry data can be presented through sound.

Sam says the method is not a replacement for conventional analysis, but it can help people experience and discuss complex data in a completely different way.

“Using sound opens up interesting conversations with people who would otherwise be unlikely to engage, raises ideas about the nature of the data, and reminds us that sometimes a little creativity is needed to balance the science.”

Meet Marco Massimino, one of the newest researchers to join the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute.

You may already recognise Marco from our recent Research Storytelling Afternoon, where he shared an introduction to his work and research journey.

Marco moved from Italy to New Zealand in 2026 to begin his doctoral research into venous malformations.

Venous malformations occur when veins develop abnormally. Their effects can vary greatly from person to person and may include pain, swelling, visible differences, or difficulties with movement and everyday activities.

As part of his PhD, Marco will develop a new 3D laboratory model that recreates aspects of venous malformations. He will use this model to explore how cells communicate, how genetic changes affect this communication, and why tissue scarring may occur.

By connecting genetic information with what he observes in the laboratory, Marco hopes to help researchers better understand why venous malformations can affect patients so differently. This knowledge could support future research into more targeted treatment approaches.

Marco’s project is supervised by Raka Mitra, Dr Clint Gray, Associate Professor Helen Fitzsimons and Dr Tracy Hale, bringing together expertise in vascular anomalies, genetics, cell biology and translational research.

Before beginning his PhD, Marco studied biotechnology and international biopharma in Italy and Austria. He was drawn to Gillies McIndoe by the opportunity to connect laboratory research with questions that matter to patients.

Outside the laboratory, Marco enjoys football, outdoor sports and spending time with friends.

“Accept the diagnosis. Defy the prognosis.”

When Maynard Okereke of Hip Hop Science asked Susan McWilliam, an ambassador for the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute, what she would say to someone facing the same diagnosis, she shared a message grounded in her own experience of living with glioblastoma.

At 34 months post-diagnosis, Susan reflects on the fear she felt at the beginning, the life she has continued to live, and the belief that “where there’s life, there’s hope.”

Susan’s experience is uniquely her own, but her words offer a powerful reminder: a diagnosis can become part of your life without defining every moment of it.

Her experience also empowers our researchers to continue searching for better treatments for glioblastoma.

🏔️ New heights, in sport and science

Our second-year doctoral researcher, Imogen Skelton, has spent the past two months representing New Zealand in six international athletics competitions across Australia and Europe. 🇳🇿

Her highlights:

🥈 2nd at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Darwin
🥇 1st at the Atletica 2000 Challenger in Italy
⭐ A season’s best high jump of 1.86m in Czechia

We are so proud of you, Imogen!

Now she is back in the lab, returning to her PhD research into infantile haemangioma, also known as strawberry birthmarks. Imogen is studying the biological signals that influence how these childhood vascular tumours grow and naturally regress.

From clearing the high jump bar to analysing complex research data, Imogen is reaching new heights wherever she goes. 🔬
