🌍🌎🌏 World Refugee Day is Saturday, 20 June.

This global observance has particular meaning for our university whānau, as approximately 222 refugee-background students are part of our community 🏫

A refugee is someone forced to leave their home due to conflict, violence, persecution, human rights violations, or events that seriously disturb public order. They cannot safely return and have little or no choice over where they go. Their movement is involuntary and protected under international law, including the 1951 Refugee Convention.

This year, we’re hosting the Te Herenga Waka Refugee-Background Community Celebration—2-4 pm, Monday 27 July—which acknowledges and celebrates the remarkable achievements and contributions of our diverse student community 🌟 More details coming soon.

We also encourage you to mark World Refugee Day with the wider community:
📅 Saturday 20 June
🕚 11 am – 3 pm
📍 Whirinaki Whare Taonga, 836 Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt
💚 Everyone is welcome
