This Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, we’re highlighting the importance of early detection and access to advanced diagnostic technology.

Bowen Hospital has invested $600,000 in a new state-of-the-art Olympus Aplio i800 endoscopic ultrasound system, enhancing the capability of our Advanced Endoscopy Centre and supporting earlier, more precise diagnosis of complex gastrointestinal conditions.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is one of the most valuable tools available for assessing conditions of the digestive system, helping specialists detect abnormalities earlier, accurately stage disease and guide treatment decisions.

This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to bringing advanced healthcare technology to our communities and improving outcomes for patients across the Wellington region.

Big news for breast cancer care in Wellington 💙

The Breast Centre at Bowen Hospital, part of Evolution Healthcare, has introduced advanced intraoperative imaging technology to support more precise breast cancer surgery.

The new Hologic Faxitron Trident HD specimen radiography system allows surgeons to confirm tumour removal in real time, right in the operating theatre.

This means:
✔ Greater surgical accuracy
✔ Fewer delays during procedures
✔ Reduced likelihood of additional surgeries

Specialists at the Breast Centre are already using the technology following training, with the first cases completed in April.

This investment reflects a continued commitment to delivering leading-edge care and better outcomes for patients across the Wellington region.

Over the last week, we were proud to host the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ Pink Caravan at Bowen Hospital and Wakefield Hospital.

The Pink Caravan provides Kiwis with valuable advice and education on all aspects of breast health — from mammograms and breast checks to healthy lifestyles and understanding family risk factors.

Both events were well attended, with fantastic support from Dr. Alex Brown at Bowen Hospital and Dr. Rita Yang at Wakefield Hospital.

Thank you to everyone who came along to learn more, ask questions, and support the importance of breast health awareness.

Our sterile services staff play a vital role in ensuring our patients receive the best, safest care.

Their work often goes unseen, but they play a role in making sure our surgeons have the instruments they need. They are the first line of defence in infection control, need to have great attention to detail and play a big role in making our operating theatres run efficiently.
