We were so thrilled to welcome Dr Lauren Holz, group head at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, University of Melbourne, to the Malaghan Institute.

Dr Holz shared her work developing vaccines that generate liver-resident T-cells to fight malaria, including her team's discovery that combining vaccine targets across different stages of liver infection dramatically improves protection.

These insights are now feeding into next-gen mRNA vaccines, developed through her ongoing collaboration with the Malaghan Institute's Hermans Lab.

Our chief executive Professor Kjesten Wiig spoke to John Campbell for RNZ Morning Report's weekly CEO spot.

"The ambition has always been there. We've worked for many decades to understand how the immune system can identify, fight, engage with pathogens of varying sources – so from bacteria to viruses, to parasites to cancer. And over the course of that time we've taken discoveries from the bench to patient bedside through clinical trials. So now we've built a lot of capability ... now we're at the stage where we can really start to leverage everything we've built so that we can move faster and better and do more in the future."

A huge congratulations to Claire Harlick, who has passed her Master's examination with First Class Honours and an A+ for her thesis.

Claire joined the Ronchese laboratory in February 2024 to study how the immune system's dendritic cells are shaped by two important signaling molecules involved in allergic-type immune responses. She built her own dataset from scratch and went on to uncover a surprising link between cholesterol processing and how these cells function.

We were delighted to welcome Dr Dan Weiss, Professor of Medicine at the University of Vermont, to the Malaghan Institute today.

Dr Weiss is the incoming President of the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy - an organisation whose work to drive clinical translation of cell and gene therapies worldwide is something we and our partners at BioOra are heavily interested in so it was a fantastic opportunity to connect with a global leader in this field!

While at the Malaghan Dr Weiss gave a talk on his own work on advances in lung regenerative medicine - something that is also of relevance to our tissue immunity research.

The Malaghan Institute’s research into Helicobacter pylori– a bacterium that is the leading cause of stomach cancer – has led to a global collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer, WHO.

The Memorandum of Understanding will support research into stomach cancer prevention and control by addressing H. pylori infection – including tackling antibiotic resistance, developing screen-and-treat strategies and sharing scientific findings and methods.

Dr Tom Mules says the MOU is recognition that the Malaghan’s H. pylori research and expertise has relevance well beyond New Zealand.

“Working with the IARC gives us the chance to contribute directly to the evidence base and toolkit that could shape stomach cancer prevention and control internationally.”

Every tumour has its own fingerprint, and PhD student Kate Nicholls is working to decode it, digging into a single altered protein and what it reveals about how a tumour interacts with the immune system. The result could help doctors know in advance which patients will actually benefit from immunotherapy, sparing others treatment that was never going to work for them. It's a glimpse into what personalised cancer care could look like. It's already shaping research across her lab group and a glimpse into what personalised cancer care could look like.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Graham Malaghan – whose family's name the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research carries, and who served more than three decades as Chairman – died peacefully on 2 July 2026, aged 82.

Former Director, Professor Sir Graham Le Gros, says Graham will be greatly missed but remembered for his legacy steering an organisation founded on generosity and hope for a better future.

Graham Malaghan served as Chairman from 1990 until December 2023, when he passed the role to Sir Paul Collins.

“Graham created his own legacy, and in doing so honoured his parents’ generosity and vision,” says Sir Paul.

In recent months, Graham and his wife Dale continued their commitment to the institute's future, establishing the Malaghan Family Leadership Fund – a perpetual gift to support professional development for the organisation’s senior leaders.

Director Professor Kjesten Wiig says the gift reflects Graham’s and his family's understanding of what an organisation like the Malaghan Institute needs to thrive.

“Over his time at the Malaghan Institute, Graham helped cultivate a high-calibre team to support world-class science. This gift is a fitting way to extend that legacy.

“Our thoughts are with Dale and the Malaghan family at this sad time.”
