Meet Sammie 💛

At 29, she’s preparing for a new life overseas. But in 2015, during her final year of high school, she was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and began a long healthcare journey.

After moving to Wellington, Sammie found herself hundreds of kilometres from her family, facing many difficult days and procedures on her own. But thanks to the small comforts made possible by people like you, she never felt alone.

It was the volunteers with a cup of Milo, a therapy dog to brighten a difficult day, a warm blanket and the nurses who knew her that made all the difference and helped Sammie keep going.

We can’t change a diagnosis, but you can change how someone experiences it.

A huge thank you to the Muhunoa East branch of Rural Women New Zealand who made a special train journey to Wellington to deliver four bags of beautiful handmade baby knitting and sewing.

This wonderful collection of lovingly crafted items will provide so much comfort and warmth for some of the youngest patients in our hospitals.

Thank you again for your generosity and time taken in creating and delivering these to us, we know they will be well loved.💛

We're so grateful for our partnership with World Marudao Karate and are looking forward to another fantastic Quiz Night next month. With this year's proceeds supporting paediatric cardiology, it's great to hear from the team about the difference new equipment will make for children and families in our region.

Year after year, this event brings our communities together and we're incredibly grateful to World Marudao Karate for championing this support and continuing to make a difference for our healthcare.

Warm clothing is essential to helping keep our tamariki healthy through the winter months.

That’s why we’re proud to join Middlemore Foundation in partnering with Standard Issue on their Jumper for Jumper campaign!

Now a year round initiative, every Standard Issue purchase contributes to the donation of warm woollen essentials including beanies, mittens and vests, to tamariki across our region.

Our first supply has now been distributed to our community nursing teams in Central Wellington and Porirua, who will help get these much needed items to the whānau who need them most.

Last night, we gathered with our community in the Hutt Valley to celebrate what can happen when we come together to support great healthcare.

It was an evening full of connections and kōrero to celebrate the incredible generosity of Sir Mark Dunajtschik, Dame Dorothy Spotswood and our wider Foundation community who are helping make Hutt Hospitals new Sir Mark Dunajtschik Mental Health Centre a reality.

This incredible new centre scheduled to open next year is part of a much broader story of care across at Hutt Hospital and our wider Wellington region. As well as hearing from Sir Mark Dunajtschik, it was a great opportunity to hear from Health NZ – Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley staff and clinical leads who work in mental health, the Burns and Plastics Unit, as well as Women and Children’s Health.

Special thanks to our speakers Paul Oxnam, Angela Gillman, Emma Joines and André Cromhout, who’s stories helped bring to life the breadth of care happening across Hutt Hospital, the importance of our partnership, and the many ways that our community helps to make a real difference for our hospitals, staff, patients and whānau in our region.

It was a moving evening and a powerful reminder that when we are here for each other, we can achieve exceptional things for healthcare in our community.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at Boulcott's Farm Heritage Golf Club, from local business and community leaders, supporters, volunteers and Health NZ staff. You are a part of the conversation that will help shape a healthier future for our region.

Calling our wonderful knitters! 📣

Winter brings an extra need for warm babywear, and your hand knitted pieces are well loved by babies and whānau in our hospitals.

We’re calling out for donations of newborn sized singlets, booties, hats and cardigans. If you’re a keen knitter, we’d love your help! You can find our favourite knitting patterns here: https://whf.org.nz/volunteer/patterns

Please note we can only accept new items made from 100% wool and we ask that you avoid ties and ribbons to keep little fingers, toes, and medical equipment safe.

A big thank you to these students from Hutt Valley High School, who chose the Foundation as a part of their Gateway Project.

These stars hosted a quiz night and raised more than $900, which they used to purchase toys, puzzles and craft activities, creating "Care Capsules" for children in our hospitals. The capsules have been shared across Te Wao Nui Children's Hospital, Mental Health and Emergency Department services, ready to provide some fun and distraction for many young patients.

Play Specialist at Te Wao Nui, Megan, said the donations were exactly what they needed:
“Our thanks and appreciation for all the fantastic resources and activities. You could tell they’d really thought about our age ranges and appropriate toys for in hospital.”

Alongside the incredible advancements in radiation therapy technology, we’re proud to have contributed to this milestone through the support of our generous donors.

As part of the LINAC replacement project, the Foundation funded the light panel and imagery installed above the machines, providing patients with a calming visual to focus on while receiving treatment.

It's a wonderful example of how thoughtful details can make a meaningful difference to the patient experience.

🏥 A milestone for cancer care at Wellington Regional Hospital.

After months of installation and extensive safety testing, patients have started receiving treatment on one of our new radiation therapy linear accelerators (LINACs).

LINACs are critical machines used every day to deliver radiation therapy for cancer patients. Around one in two people diagnosed with cancer will benefit from radiation therapy at some point during their care.

Replacing a LINAC is far more than swapping one machine for another. Each machine weighs several tonnes, sits inside a purpose-built bunker with 1.2-metre-thick concrete walls, and undergoes rigorous testing before it can safely treat patients.

The new technology includes advanced camera based surface guidance, which supports highly accurate patient positioning and provides real time monitoring of movement throughout treatment. Combined with millimetre level treatment accuracy, it enables very precise radiation delivery while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

The second LINAC replacement will take place later this year, with the programme continuing to modernise and future-proof cancer treatment services for the communities we serve.

These awesome young ladies from Hutt Valley High School have been busy creating special colouring in books for their project, Pages for Patients.🖍

What started as an idea to create colouring pages has grown into beautifully assembled colouring books and pencil packs for children staying at Te Wao Nui Children's Hospital.

These thoughtful donations will provide moments of creativity and distraction for young patients when they’re waiting for a procedure, or spending time in one of the whānau spaces.

We're so grateful to these students for using their project to help better a child's hospital stay. Thank you team for making such a meaningful difference!
