Craniowaves - Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy with Liz Kirkman

Craniowaves - Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy with Liz Kirkman Craniowaves offers Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. BCST is a non-manipulative touch based therapy t The system is held in a non-judgemental, neutral way.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy respects the knowledge that we grew ourselves from a collection of cells. Through informed touch a practitioner assists the body's natural state of repair. This work stems from Osteopathy and has a rich basis in anatomy, however is non-manipulative. Clients have reported finding it particularly useful for balancing the central nervous system and our 'fight or flight

' response which is aggravated in many of us, due to the stresses of our 21st century lives. The client remains fully clothed, lying on their back as the practitioner cradles certain parts of the body, depending on what they system requires - it could be the ankles, the head, the sacrum/tailbone. Through informed touch, the practitioner is able to facilitate changes in their client's system. These changes are paced at the priority of the client, rather than a 'here's where you're broken, I'm going to fix you' mentality. The practitioner listens to the whole, so often changes are global - even though you've come in with a knee issue, the hip and shoulder and perhaps the cranial base might have had to make adjustments before the knee can really release. Empowerment and a renegotiation with their own health occurs, which can express itself in a variety of ways from sleeping, to shaking, to crying, to deep relaxation and bliss. As it really appreciates this type of contact, shifts are often occurring in many parts of the body simultaneously or in quick succession. The body is given the opportunity to release what it no longer needs to carry.

The ‘no-mind’ with Etienne Peirsman

As someone who has assisted on and taught craniosacral trainings for 13 years, this has always been a point of contention. How can anyone: practitioner, student or client be in a state of complete 'no-mind' or non-doing with each other?...

No, Etienne Peirsman is not performing Lear for us, but some of this amazing 4 days I spent with him, he may well have been. Etienne is a Grandaddy of craniosacral, teaching for almost 40 years. He brings a great meditative practice to biomechanical work; which is different to the way in which I work, but highly refreshing to dip my toes in, with 22 other biodynamic craniosacral therapists.

He is like a performance poet; guiding us into deep sessions. He often works with all kinds of people, but it was lush all working from the same modality - it meant he didn't have to teach us to suck eggs. He spoke about, 'getting on the bus' of the client - which we often call, the 'inherent treatment plan' in our work - what the system wants to do. But this 'bus' we were on, was already transiting on Etienne's ferry!

The sphenoid bone is the keystone of the bones of the brain, housing your pituitary gland and with the occiput, has to be slightly ossified at birth to support the weight of your brain. He spoke of most people walking around with an adult brain on a baby frame. I've done lots of physical work around my nervous system in relation to my birth, (which was quick) but this level of slowing down and being with the physiological moulding of the ligament supporting the brain, was something else. It resonated through my throat, chest and pelvis as well, like a slow wringing out and resetting.

We also did more intra-oral work, which I already have in the kete and use when needed, but adding another layer felt incredibly powerful and I've already seen the benefits of this back in clinic.

Here's to Etienne and his wonderful fellow practitioner/teacher/partner Toshiko coming back next year. Thanks also to the wonderful bunch of practitioners, Aleks Marks at Fellworth, Josie for the kai, Rielle Friedrich for the photos and my wondrous friend and colleague Lolly of Soma Academy for getting him to come to Aotearoa!

"I wanted to let you know that since my session with you...my hip has felt so much better and I have been able to run in the hills pain free. I'm very grateful 🙂"

When you're present and working with someone, often you don't know the extent to how someone will process the treatment .

It's as individual as a thumbprint. We are all different, with different life experiences. Important to just stay neutral and keep encouraging people to be with their health.

'Embryonic imperative expressing its original morphology.'

As I prepare to teach developing craniosacral therapists this week the art of working with babies and families, an article Ged Sumner (founder of BI and my teacher) wrote when I was still on my own foundation training in 2012, resonates deeply - we are simply bearing witness to these original forces time and time again.

Sometimes it really is sitting within the absolute simplicity that brings about the most fundamental of changes.

"My 2month old had reflux and I took him to Liz for a healing and her magic hands helped so much. He went from screaming uncontrollably for hours x2-3times a day to just x1 a day after seeing her and then a week later that screaming went from 1hour to 30mins, 15mins,5mins and then stopped completely after the second week from our visit. He would power chuck through so many towels in a day but after those two weeks he just went through a couple bibs a day. He is the happiest baby now and I can’t thank Liz enough she is so amazing! I highly recommend!!"

Client comment of the day - "Slept 7.5 hours. No Afib. Heart beat so quiet that I thought it wasn't going anymore (and that was fine). Legs feel normal this morning. First morning for months to get out of bed and feel great!

Thanks Liz. I am so grateful."

Been seeing someone who's been having awful bouts of atrial fibrillation (AF) - sometimes lasting days on end. Often waking in the night and unable to calm themselves down. An active person, they've had lethargy in limbs, sometimes not being able to get out of bed, let alone keep up with their squat routines. Only getting a few hours sleep a night. They have all the tools - but it can be incredibly hard to come back from. We are mammals and regulatory beings - and sometimes we need that co-regulation to help us get back on track.

Steve was one of the founders of the Body Intelligence training, who I learnt from and continue to teach with. I was privileged to work with him in 2014, on a craniosacral PG; Working with Emotions: Heart, Belly and Throat.

His distillation, the OMG technique; Orient, Move, Ground, has just been highlighted in The Guardian. So important to remember how we must create safety - we are mammals first and foremost and need to get ourselves out of threat. Conscious and unconscious. Such a big part of what I support clients with.

Old parts of the brain do run, jump, fight or shutdown. They do not do Shakespeare, Mozart, Turing or complex concepts in general.

They respond to simple stimuli; Orienting, Moving, Grounding, OMG.

My favourites to teach clients: slow head turning, really slow head turning, feeling power in the limbs by pushing and squeezing, tuning into the size and shape of the feet. It still amazes me how often feet feel tiny and far away.

‘Old parts of the brain’ means old in terms of evolution. Brains got bigger and more complex by adapting what was already there. Deep in our nervous system, we have reflexes that originated from reptiles and mammals.

Researchers also use ‘critter brain’, ‘primitive brain’, ‘reflex brain’ or ’quick brain’. All these descriptors tell us the old brain is not a talking, reflective, abstract concepts kind of place.

Feeling and moving your way out of trauma responses is almost certainly a better strategy than trying to remember or understand the events that may have triggered protective reflexes.

I am now an ally of this organisation and looking forward to working with those in need. - With what's been going on with the retraction of honouring Te Tiriti principles over the last while it's been really exciting to learn of the amazing service Hohou Te Rongo Kahukura provide for Takatāpui and Rainbow youth suffering sexual harm.
