Whakamātūtū is at risk of closing.

The Government has declined funding for our kaupapa-informed mental health day service - a lifeline for tāngata whaiora and their whānau.

Every day, we see lives being rebuilt. We see hope returning. We see people connecting, stabilising, and thriving with the right support around them.

Without urgent action, our service will close before the end of the year.

We’ve poured our hearts into creating a safe, healing space for people in mental distress. We are an alternative to emergency departments where hope, connection, and recovery is possible.

But without government funding, our future is uncertain. This isn’t just about us… it’s about the people who need help. They need help now!

This Mental Health Awareness Week, join us as we Top Up Together by taking time each day to practice one of the Five Ways to Wellbeing | Ngā Ara e Rima ki te Oranga. 🌿

At Whakamātūtū, we run daily sessions with our participants called "Tools for your kete" where we share practical tips to support their recovery, such as understanding our nervous system, storytelling as healing and reconnecting with identity, mana and group connection.

Each topic is tailored to the participants journey and grounded in Te Whare Tapa Whā, helping build resilience, awareness, and independence.

By connecting with each other through these simple yet proven actions, we can find balance, build strength, and boost the wellbeing of ourselves and the people around us💚

At Whakamātūtū, we know recovery is not just about the mind.

Our work is grounded in Te Whare Tapa Whā, alongside other therapeutic approaches.

This model teaches that wellbeing rests on the four sides of the whare:
- Taha tinana – the physical side
- Taha hinengaro – the mental side
- Taha wairua – the spiritual side
- Taha whānau – the family and community side

Whenua (land, place) underpins it all.

When one side is weakened, the whare becomes unstable. Recovery means strengthening each side so the whole whare can stand strong.

Our name, Whakamātūtū, was gifted to us by Te Āti Awa kaumātua and chairman, Kura Moeahu.

It means to recover or restore one’s health.

The inner design of our logo reflects the integrated nature of recovery and our programmes. The outer design symbolises the forward momentum of people’s healing journeys.

We carry this meaning in everything we do.

This week we celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori | Māori Language Week.

Te reo Māori is more than words - it opens doors to ways of thinking and being.

At Whakamātūtū, we align deeply to this in our approach to recovery: healing that honours body, mind, spirit, and community.

He reo, he oranga | Through language, there is wellbeing.
