One of Nature's Hardest Workers šŸ

A single bee may be tiny, but together a hive performs an extraordinary job.

Bees pollinate many of the fruits, vegetables and plants we rely on every day. Without pollinators, our food systems would look very different.

That's one reason I loved learning more about local beekeeper Jewelle Lloyd and her passion for raising healthy bees and producing beautiful raw honey. Here's the article - https://organicnz.org.nz/magazine-articles/queen-bee-of-ohope/

When we choose local honey, we're not just buying a product. We're supporting small producers, pollinator health, biodiversity and regional food resilience.

Every jar represents thousands upon thousands of bee journeys from flower to flower.

The next time you enjoy a spoonful of honey, take a moment to appreciate the incredible work behind it.

Did You Know? Crystallised Raw Honey Is Actually a Good Sign.

Have you ever opened a jar of honey and found it thick, grainy or crystallised?
Many people think this means the honey has gone off, but the opposite is often true.

Crystallisation is a natural process that commonly occurs in raw, minimally processed honey. It can be a sign that the honey hasn't been heavily heated or overly processed.

In fact, many raw honey lovers see crystallisation as evidence they're getting honey closer to its natural state.

If you prefer it runny, simply place the jar in warm (not boiling) water and stir gently until it softens.

Nature doesn't always fit neatly on a supermarket shelf šŸ¤—

Raw Honey is More Than Just a Sweetener šŸ

Most of us think of honey as something we stir into tea or drizzle over porridge. But raw honey is far more than a natural sweetener.

Raw honey contains naturally occurring enzymes, antioxidants and plant compounds that have been valued for generations. From soothing a sore throat to supporting wellness during winter, honey has earned its place in many traditional home remedies.

One of the things I love most about local honey is that every jar tells a story. The flowers the bees visit, the season, the climate and the care of the beekeeper all contribute to its unique flavour and character.

Supporting local beekeepers also helps support healthy pollinator populations, which are essential for our food systems and biodiversity.

These bees (pictured) belong to Ohope Bee Keeper & Honey Producer, Jewelle Lloyd. Find her at the Whakatane Sunday Markets. Have you read the article?https://organicnz.org.nz/magazine-articles/queen-bee-of-ohope/

MEET JEWELLE LLOYD: THE QUEEN BEE OF ŌHOPE

Some people keep bees. Jewelle Lloyd lives and breathes them.

From childhood days spent watching her grandmother tend hives near the family homestead, to managing around 30 hives across the Bay of Plenty and Gisborne today, beekeeping has become a lifelong passion and a family tradition.

Jewelle raises her own queen bees, produces beautiful raw honey, sells beeswax products, and is deeply committed to hive health and sustainability. Her love for bees is infectious and her story is a wonderful reminder of the connection between people, pollinators and the food we eat.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Jewelle for OrganicNZ Magazine and The Whakatane Beacon/Opotiki News & learnt more about her fascinating world of queen bees, honey production, biodiversity and the importance of supporting local beekeepers.

Her story is inspiring, educational and a beautiful example of how passion can become a way of life.

Sometimes the foods we overlook hold the deepest wisdom.

Fennel supports digestion, feeds pollinators, grows beautifully in New Zealand gardens and adds incredible flavour to seasonal meals.

Raw or cooked - which is better?

Like many vegetables, fennel loses some vitamin C during cooking. But cooking also softens the fibres, improves digestibility and brings out fennel’s natural sweetness.

Nutrition is rarely about ā€œperfectā€.
It’s about variety, balance and eating more real food consistently.

Try:
- shaved raw fennel in salads
- roasted fennel with orange
- fennel soup on cooler evenings

Your body keeps score of the things your mouth doesn’t say.
Stress is not only what happens to us, it’s also what we tolerate repeatedly.

Where could one small boundary create more peace?
