Gut Instinct! We're Often Told to Listen to Our Gut. But How Do We Interpret What it's Telling us?

The gut–brain axis influences mood, immunity and digestion — it affects neurotransmitters like serotonin (around 90% of which is produced in the gut), inflammatory responses and nutrient absorption. So poor diet, dehydration and chronic stress can increase inflammation and disrupt the microbiome, leading to low mood, weakened immunity, bloating and brain fog. https://buff.ly/ZD7KSzt

At Firstinhealth Coaching Services I use a quick, evidence-informed Health and Lifestyle Questionnaire Audit to spot patterns in diet, sleep quality, stress triggers and hydration (scan the QR on our landing page) so I can tailor practical coaching steps like boosting fibre intake (aiming for ~25–30 g/day), improving sleep routines (consistent bedtimes, less evening screen time and targeting 7–9 hours), restoring fluids (about 1.5–2 L/day) and managing stress with simple strategies such as breathing exercises or short daily walks. These targeted, achievable changes often reduce bloating, sharpen mental clarity and support immune resilience. —Kieran Luke Baragwanath *Scan the QR code for more info about our products, services and philosophy and view this link: https://buff.ly/QdUBrO0

Small daily steps lead to big, lasting change — start with one tiny habit this week and focus on repeating it consistently. Pick something specific and manageable (for example, 5 minutes of journaling, a short walk around the block, a single glass of water first thing, or two minutes of stretching) so it’s easy to follow. Even tiny actions add up — 5 minutes a day becomes over 30 hours a year — and research shows small, repeated behaviors often become automatic after around 60–70 days, so patience and a simple routine really matter. Consistency usually beats intensity: small, sustainable practices compound over weeks and months. Make it easier by pairing the new habit with an existing cue (like after brushing your teeth), tracking progress with a tick-box, calendar or habit app, sharing your goal with an accountability buddy, and celebrating small wins to stay motivated. Health Coaching and The Art of HRV training — the executive stress lever nobody talks about.

I use HeartMath biofeedback and short 3–10 minute coherence practices—guided breathing, resonance routines, and real-time coherence scores—to raise HRV, speed recovery, and keep you clear under pressure. These concise, evidence-backed techniques strengthen vagal tone and restore autonomic balance, producing measurable shifts in heart-rate variability, calm, and mental focus within minutes. They’re easy to practice anywhere with a sensor or app and are ideal right before presentations, immediately after workouts, during stressful transitions, or between back-to-back meetings. I teach practical, repeatable routines you can rely on to recover faster, think more clearly, and perform consistently under stress. Your Expectations, Discipline and Accountability at Work Are Exceptional. Yet, What About Your Health and Well-Being, Where Does This Sit in Your Priorities?

Executives who are ready stop looking for motivation: your health is your greatest investment, yet most leaders optimize portfolios more than their mental and physical operating system. I work with a small number of founders and executives across tech, finance and startups who accept that willpower is not a strategy. If you’ve tried apps, retreats and one-size-fits-all protocols and now demand measurable ROI — clearer focus, fewer sick days, sustained energy throughout the day, faster recovery, reduced burnout risk and sharper decision-making — and want a white‑glove, bespoke partnership that redesigns habits, sleep, nutrition and stress resilience, let’s talk. My approach combines personalized baseline assessments, tailored sleep and nutrition plans, behavioral redesign, ongoing coaching and discreet accountability so improvements are trackable (sleep efficiency, energy ratings, recovery markers and fewer performance lapses). I offer a limited number of confidential intro calls each month to ensure exclusivity and privacy. Your body's health is the cornerstone of your entire existence — invest in it.

I will not write you a meal plan until your nervous system is regulated. Here’s why:
- Chronic sympathetic dominance (the prolonged “fight-or-flight” state) reduces digestive efficiency and interferes with nutrient absorption by diverting blood flow away from the gut. In other words, when your body is constantly primed for danger, enzymes, motility, and microbiome interactions that support digestion all underperform — so even the best diet can fail to nourish you.
- A flattened cortisol curve disrupts energy rhythms, appetite cues, and habit formation — when stress hormones don’t ebb and flow naturally, consistent behavior change becomes much harder. Healthy cortisol typically rises in the morning and tapers by evening; when that rhythm is blunted, people experience midday crashes, late-night cravings, and difficulty sticking to routines.
- If your brain can’t downshift into rest mode, you won’t sleep deeply, recover well, or rebuild tissue and metabolic resilience. Poor autonomic regulation compromises restorative sleep stages and impairs repair processes that are essential for progress from both nutrition and exercise.

That’s why every engagement at Firstinhealth Coaching Services starts with a neural foundation — Muse neurofeedback paired with HeartMath HRV training. We quantify your baseline (HRV, coherence, neural patterns), apply targeted regulation tools, then layer in personalized nutrition, movement, and performance strategies. Practically, that means we stabilize physiology first so your dietary changes actually stick and your workouts support recovery instead of adding more stress. Think of it as building on bedrock instead of shifting sand.

In practice many clients notice clearer appetite signals, fewer digestive symptoms, deeper sleep, and more sustainable energy after we normalize autonomic balance. I’ve been doing this for 25 years — order matters. Foundation first.

What is the Somatic Nervous system sand How Understanding its Function Has Powerful Benefits to Our Quality of Life?

What is the somatic nervous system and how can grasping its role dramatically improve our quality of life?

The somatic nervous system is the part of your peripheral nervous system that conveys sensory information to your brain and controls voluntary movement — the way your body senses touch, posture, and motion, and how you intentionally move through the world. Understanding how it interacts with your autonomic systems (sympathetic “fight/flight” and parasympathetic “rest/digest”) is powerful: when sensory input, posture, breathing, and movement are optimized, your brain stops treating routine decisions and small stresses like emergencies.

That 3 PM slump isn’t just a coffee shortage — it’s often a nervous system issue.

Every executive I work with reaches for the same quick fixes: another espresso, a protein bar, a short walk, or an imagined nap that never happens. The real cause frequently isn’t lack of caffeine. It’s a flattened cortisol curve. Your sympathetic nervous system has been in overdrive since 6 AM — triaging emails, decisions, and tense conversations — and by mid-afternoon your body slams on the brakes, creating that heavy fatigue and reduced focus.

That’s why I begin with neural foundation work before prescribing nutrition. Before we overhaul your diet, we restore how your nervous system manages stress across the day. Practical, evidence-informed interventions I use include breath-based regulation to improve vagal tone, simple mobility and posture resets to change sensory input, short sensory breaks to interrupt chronic sympathetic arousal, and timed micro-recovery practices that fit an executive schedule. These approaches recalibrate your body’s feedback loops so stressors stop escalating into full-blown physiological shutdowns.

The outcome? Most clients stop grabbing that second coffee within two weeks. Not because they’re trying to quit — because they simply don’t need it anymore. By fixing the root regulatory patterns (not only the symptoms), energy evens out, decision-making sharpens, and late-afternoon crashes fade.

Further reading: see the Cleveland Clinic, SimplyPsychology, Verywell Mind, ScienceDirect, Psychology Today, and anatomy resources linked below for background on nervous system function and the research connecting stress, cortisol patterns, and daily performance.

ELIXIRS — IS THERE REALLY A SECRET TO SLOWING AGING AND BOOSTING LONGEVITY? SHORT ANSWER: YES!

Evidence from lab research and early human trials points to multiple promising strategies — from prescription medicines and targeted supplements to lifestyle shifts and centuries-old remedies — that together can help slow biological aging and enhance healthspan.

What researchers are exploring: pharmaceutical approaches (senolytics that clear harmful senescent cells, metabolic modulators like mTOR inhibitors, and NAD+ precursors that support cellular energy), nutraceuticals and targeted herbal formulas, plus foundational lifestyle pillars. Proven everyday habits include regular resistance and aerobic exercise, personalized nutrition or intermittent fasting, sleep optimization, and stress resilience practices such as mindfulness and breathwork. Animal studies frequently report notable gains in lifespan and healthspan — in some model organisms these interventions produced tens of percent improvements — and human research is increasingly showing measurable benefits in clinical biomarkers and functional health. For example, trials are demonstrating improvements in metabolic markers, inflammatory profiles (like CRP), insulin sensitivity, and even shifts in molecular aging clocks after combined interventions.

What that means practically: a pragmatic longevity plan often blends cutting-edge medical tools (when appropriate and supervised by clinicians) with evidence-backed supplements and time-tested traditional practices. Examples include combining resistance training 2–4 times per week with aerobic conditioning, adopting a Mediterranean-style or otherwise personalized diet with periods of time-restricted eating, prioritizing consistent 7–8 hours of restorative sleep, and incorporating stress-management routines plus select herbal support from traditions such as Eastern medicine. Multimodal approaches — merging clinical guidance, lifestyle coaching, and careful use of supplements or targeted pharmaceuticals — tend to produce the most consistent, measurable improvements in quality of life and biological aging markers.

Kieran from Firstinhealth Coaching Services has spent years studying, applying, and integrating many of these evidence-based longevity strategies. He designs individualized programs that balance modern scientific findings with practical daily habits and complementary herbal or Oriental medicine perspectives, helping clients pursue longer, healthier, more resilient lives. His coaching emphasizes personalized assessment, actionable routines, and ongoing adjustments based on progress and biomarkers.

If you’re curious about exploring a tailored plan — whether you want to improve metabolic health, enhance vitality, or pursue longer-term age resilience — get in touch with Kieran and his team to discuss what might work best for you.

Struggling to sleep? Firstinhealth Coaching Services (Kieran Luke Baragwanath) shares simple, research-backed habits you can start tonight to get deeper, more peaceful rest. Try a consistent sleep–wake schedule to stabilise your circadian rhythm (most adults do best with 7–9 hours), a 20–30 minute wind-down—reading, a warm bath, gentle stretching or paced breathing—and limit screens and late-afternoon caffeine (avoid caffeine 6+ hours before bed and reduce blue light exposure 30–60 minutes before sleep). Also optimise your bedroom—keep it cool (around 16–19°C / 60–67°F), dark and quiet, use blackout curtains or white noise/earplugs, and choose comfortable bedding and pillows for better sleep efficiency. Reach out for personalised coaching to tailor these strategies to your routine and needs.

11/08/2026

How productive are you, really? We all get the same 24 hours—once sleep, family, and other obligations are factored in, how much truly focused work can you squeeze in without sacrificing your well‑being? It’s useful to be honest: quantity of hours isn’t the same as quality of attention.

Research shows that good sleep and deliberate rest improve concentration, memory, decision‑making, creativity, and overall job performance, while also reducing errors and the risk of burnout. Aim for consistent sleep (most adults tend to do best with about 7–9 hours) and schedule recovery throughout the day—short naps (10–20 minutes), movement breaks, stretching, and screen‑free pauses restore attention and lower mistake rates. Instead of trying to stretch the day, measure your usable focus time: for a week, log where your attention actually goes (a simple paper log or focus apps like Toggl, RescueTime, or Forest can help), note interruptions, then total the blocks of uninterrupted deep work.

Protect and optimize those hours: time‑block your calendar for 1–2 hour focus sessions or align with roughly 90‑minute ultradian cycles, and treat those slots like non‑negotiable meetings—turn off notifications, enable Do Not Disturb, and decline or reschedule meetings that would break them up. Use one Most Important Task (MIT) per block, swap busywork for a single high‑impact task when you’re at peak focus, and take strategic breaks (a 5–15 minute walk, brief nap, or a quick mindfulness reset can replenish energy). Small changes—prioritizing a single key task, enforcing restorative breaks, and reframing rest as a performance tool—often yield bigger productivity gains than simply grinding longer hours.

Practical examples: try a 90‑minute deep work block followed by a 20‑minute recovery window; or use Pomodoro‑style cycles (25/5) for admin tasks and longer blocks for complex work. Track distractions (email, meetings, social media) and experiment with batching similar tasks to reduce switching costs. Over time, you’ll see where your attention leaks and how many real hours of focused work you can sustain without sacrificing health.
