🌿 THE VALUE OF HAVING SOMEONE CONSTANTLY BY YOUR SIDE 🌿

Yesterday I shared a little about the difference doula support made for one of my recent clients.

Today I want to talk about something that can benefit every pregnancy, labour and birth — continuity of support.

Pregnancy and birth can be beautiful and empowering, but they can also involve uncertainty. Plans may change. Different medical professionals may come and go. New information may be presented, and sometimes decisions need to be made when you are tired, emotional or in the intensity of labour.

Your doula is one person who can remain constant throughout it all.

I am not there to replace your midwife, doctor or medical team. I work alongside them, supporting you.

I am there to listen.
To reassure.
To help you understand what is happening.
To remind you of the questions you wanted to ask.
To help you slow things down when there is time to do so.
To support your partner and whānau.
To offer comfort through massage, movement, positioning and breathing.
And sometimes, simply to sit beside you and remind you that you are not alone.

A doula gets to know you — your hopes, your fears, your preferences and what helps you feel safe.

And when circumstances change, as they sometimes do in birth, that familiar face and calm presence can be incredibly grounding.

Doula support isn't only for home births or natural births. It isn't only for first babies or difficult pregnancies.

It can be valuable during an induction.
During an epidural.
During a VBAC.
During a planned or unexpected Caesarean birth.
During a long labour.
And during the beautifully straightforward births too.

Because regardless of how your baby arrives, you deserve to feel supported, heard, informed and cared for throughout your experience.

That is the heart of being a doula. 🤍

What Doula Support Looked Like for My Most Recent Client

Although my client lived five hours away, distance did not prevent us from creating a beautiful bond built on trust, connection and understanding.
During her third trimester, we spent time together in person preparing gently for the journey ahead. She received a nurturing pregnancy massage, explored essential oils, nourishing food ideas and supportive yoga movements, and learned practical ways to prepare her body and mind for labour and birth.
After experiencing a caesarean birth with her first baby, she hoped to work towards a vaginal birth this time. She was supported by the same lovely midwife who had cared for her during her first pregnancy.
When the early signs of labour began, I travelled to be with her.
As the early stage of labour unfolded, we talked, walked in the park, shared meals and spent time with her family. We visited the birth centre for a check-up, returned home for a while and later travelled together to the hospital for further support.
During her time in hospital, family and friends came and went, with her mum staying for much of the journey. At every decision point, we could talk things through calmly. Because of the relationship we had already built, she knew she had someone beside her who understood her hopes, her fears and what mattered most to her.
Throughout labour, I was able to respond to her needs with confidence and intuition—offering massage, encouraging fluids, sharing updates with her family, supporting her husband when things became difficult and helping her find calm when she felt she might fall apart.
I gently reminded her of her hopes for this birth while supporting her through the ever-changing dance of decisions. We adapted whenever the journey asked us to, always keeping her wellbeing, wishes and safety at the centre.
During a very long and challenging labour, she was cared for by ten different midwives, three anaesthetists, six doctors and many nurses.
Through it all, I remained her constant.
When our eyes met, she knew I was there. Sometimes all that was needed was a soft voice, a reassuring touch or a familiar presence. Her family knew they would be kept informed, giving them comfort and less reason to worry.
It felt like a sacred ribbon gently tying everyone together and helping to hold this family through an intense and deeply meaningful experience.
This is what being a doula means to me.
A doula sits beside you—we do not take over. We may ask for a little time or space when it is needed, offer gentle encouragement and support you to understand and communicate your choices. We work within our scope of practice and alongside midwives and medical professionals, adding continuous, nurturing and holistic care.
Doula support is not about working against your midwife. It is about working together as part of a team, with each person contributing to the care of the mother, baby and family.
Today, my client has a beautiful new baby to introduce to her older sister and their extended family and friends. I arrived home with a full heart—and after a well-earned twelve-hour sleep, I am once again reminded of how deeply honoured I am to be invited into these sacred birth spaces. 🤍

There are moments in life that remind you exactly why you do what you do. Pregnancy and Birth support is what I do.

Today is one of those days.

Being welcomed into a birth space is a privilege I never take lightly. To support women and their families as they navigate pregnancy, labour, birth, and the transition into parenthood is truly an honour.

Birth is more than a clinical event. It is a life-changing experience that deserves care, compassion, and unwavering support.

As a doula, I am there to hold space, offer reassurance, encourage confidence, and support your choices every step of the way.

🌿 Currently taking bookings for upcoming due dates.

If you're looking for personalised, nurturing support alongside your midwife, I'd love to chat.
