TERM THREE ENROLMENTS OPEN

Psychology Through the Lenses

In this six-week course, we'll explore psychology through different perspectives, developmental, social, cognitive, behavioural and humanistic psychology.

We will explore how each perspective helps explain the same person or behaviour.

Because in psychology, there is never just one explanation… only different ways of seeing.

A course for curious minds who love asking questions and seeing the world in new ways.

Perfect for curious teens

TIMETABLE TERM THREE

I'm keeping things simple in term three with just three courses.

📚 HerStories: Kate Sheppard

We'll explore the life and legacy of New Zealand's most famous suffragist, while asking bigger questions about democracy, social change, and how ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference.

🧠 Master Your Mind: Outsmart Your Thinking Traps

In this course we'll learn to spot common thinking traps, understand how our minds work, and develop practical strategies for more helpful ways of thinking.

🔍 Psychology Through the Lenses

Explore the big ideas of psychology by looking at human behaviour through different perspectives: biological, cognitive, behavioural, social and humanism. A great introduction to learning how different psychologists make sense of the world.

As always, these courses are designed to encourage curiosity, thoughtful conversations, and a love of learning.

Here is the timetable. All sessions are recorded and you have ongoing access to the content and resources so you can revisit when ever you like :-)

I'll pop the enrolment details in the comments below.

DID YOU KNOW.....?

Did you know there's a difference between a suffragist and a suffragette?

I didn't.

I always assumed they were two words for the same thing.

As it turns out, a suffragist was someone who campaigned for women's right to vote.

A suffragette was a member of a particular movement that used more militant tactics such as protests, civil disobedience, and hunger strikes.

Kate Sheppard and the New Zealand movement were generally known as suffragists.

And she is who we will be studying next term as part of the HerStories Series.

One of the things I love most about researching and creating courses is discovering things I never knew myself.

The more I learn about Kate Sheppard, the more fascinating her story becomes.

It's not just a story about voting.

It's a story about advocacy, communication, leadership, and how ordinary people can work together to create extraordinary social change.

Proof that you're never too old to learn something new.

So now I'm curious...

Did you already know the difference, or did you just learn something new?

I would love your feedback

I'm putting the finishing touches on a new online course for tweens and teens:

Master Your Mind: Outsmart Your Thinking Traps

We'll be exploring common thinking traps such as;
* jumping to conclusions, *catastrophising,
*mind reading,
* black-and-white thinking,
*assumptions,
*confirmation bias

We will learn how to spot them, question them, and think more clearly.

I'm trying to decide between these two graphics for the course.

TERM THREE: HERSTORIES COURSES is coming soon.

It's an election year.

Any guesses who were are studying next?

Hint: This woman is really on the money!!!!

HERSTORIES
VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

The woman we are studying this term is Vivienne Westwood.

I came across this short clip of her being interviewed about one of her collections and thought it was a fantastic discussion starter as it filled with so many psychological and sociological ideas.

As you watch notice the dynamic in the room.

The audience is laughing.

The interviewer appears sceptical.

Some of the questions are quite challenging.

Yet Vivienne remains remarkably composed.

She doesn't apologise. She doesn't shrink herself and become embarrassed. She doesn't suddenly change her mind because the room disagrees with her.

Instead, she calmly holds her position and trusts her work.

Demonstrating profound self belief (we go into this in our course, but for now some questions)

Rather than thinking about her designs specifically, watch with curiosity and pay attention to the human behavior unfolding

Here are some questions to consider:

• Why do you think the audience was laughing?

• Were they responding to the clothes, and/or to the reactions of the people around them?

Have you ever caught the giggles of someone else?

• If nobody else had laughed, do you think the response would have been different?

• Have you ever found yourself agreeing with someone else before you had fully formed your own opinion?

Think about the interviewer too:

• What do think about her questions? and her tone of voice?

Do you think her questions influenced the audience?

How much power do interviewers hold in terms of shaping how we perceive someone or learn about an event?

And then consider Vivienne herself:

• What do you notice about her response?

• Why do you think she remained calm?

What beliefs or qualities might have helped her stay so grounded?

• What might have happened if she had taken the audience's reaction personally?

• What qualities do you think people need to share new or unconventional ideas with the world?

Self reflection

Imagine yourself in each role:

• What might you have done if you were sitting in the audience?

• How would you have responded if you were the interviewer and the audience was laughing at your guest?

• What if you were in Vivienne's position and your ideas or work were being laughed at?

Notice what comes up for you.

There are no right or wrong answers here. These questions are simply prompts to spark curiosity, reflection, and conversation.

HINT: This is not a full list of questions, you might not even use all of them, they are just ideas to spark curiosity and conversation.

After all Curious minds learn.

Online courses started this week.

In one of the courses Master Your Mind: The Habit Edition, we explored habits, unconscious behaviour, and the idea that many of our daily actions run on “autopilot.”

We talked about how small repeated actions over time can shape our lives and futures, often without us even noticing.

We explored some of our own habits, (helpful and unhelpful)

Here's an invitation to take a moment today to notice one small habit that already supports you.

What do you do regularly that helps your day/week run a little smoother?
