Recent statistics indicate that Port Moresby General Hospital is filled up to sixty percent with category 3 patients.

These category of patients are in need of urgent treatment, but are generally non-life-threatening cases.

Abau MP Sir Puka Temu told Parliament, information shows, in terms of emergency- category 3 patients which are those that don't need specialist doctors.

PMGH Overburdened Due to Lack of Primary Healthcare Facilities in Port Moresby, Says Health Minister

Health Minister Hon. Elias Kapavore says the increasing patient load at Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) is largely due to the lack of Level 1 to Level 5 healthcare facilities in Port Moresby.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Minister Kapavore explained that Levels 1 to 5 facilities provide primary healthcare services, including community health centres, district hospitals, and provincial hospitals.

“PMGH is a Level 6 hospital. Mothers are not supposed to go there to give birth. Instead, they should access primary healthcare facilities for maternity services,” he said.

The Minister said that Port Moresby currently lacks sufficient primary healthcare facilities, with Gerehu Hospital still undergoing renovations.

“At the moment, there are no fully functioning primary healthcare facilities in Port Moresby. Gerehu Hospital is still being renovated, and we are planning to increase the number of beds there as well as at Kwikila Hospital,” he said.

Minister Kapavore said the absence of primary healthcare services in the National Capital District has resulted in many patients seeking treatment directly at PMGH.

“PMGH is the National Referral Hospital and is intended to provide specialised care and services,” he said.

He added that PMGH is expanding its specialised services, including kidney transplant and cardiac care programs.

“PMGH is now focusing on specialised areas such as kidney transplants and advanced heart care services. We need to allow PMGH to operate at this level while we strengthen primary healthcare services at Levels 1 to 5 facilities,” he said.

Minister Kapavore advised expectant mothers to seek maternity services at Metoreia Urban Health Centre in Moresby North East rather than travelling to PMGH.

To help reduce the burden on PMGH, health officials are also working to improve healthcare services and staffing levels at Central Province’s Kwikila Hospital and Gulf Province’s Kerema General Hospital.

Port Moresby General Hospital: Strengthening Specialized Care for Papua New Guinea

Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) is Papua New Guinea’s Level 6 National Tertiary Referral, Research, and Teaching Hospital. Guided by the National Health Service Standards and the National Health Plan, PMGH’s mandate is to deliver high-end specialized health care to address the growing burden of lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and kidney disease. Our vision is to ensure Papua New Guineans can access world-class care locally, without the need to spend exorbitant amounts of money seeking treatment overseas.

To achieve this, PMGH must be supported by strong primary and secondary health systems. Under the NHSS framework, every district is expected to have a Level 4 District Hospital, and each province a Level 5 Hospital. Currently, the National Capital District (NCD) and Central Province remain the only provinces without Level 5 hospitals. Many Level 4 facilities in Moresby North East, Moresby South, and Central Province are either non-functional or under-resourced, leaving PMGH to carry the combined load of two Level 5 hospitals and multiple Level 4 district hospitals. Patients from Gulf Province also rely heavily on PMGH services.

With Port Moresby and Central Province’s combined population exceeding one million, PMGH is stretched to its limits. Today, 80% of our services are secondary care, while only 20% are specialized care, the very role PMGH was designed to fulfill. Without urgent intervention, secondary care demands will overwhelm our capacity to deliver specialized services.

Maternity care is one of the most critical areas under strain. PMGH delivers approximately 17,000 babies annually around 60 births per day in a labor ward with 25 beds. With the population growing at 3% per year and increasing migration into Port Moresby, the pressure on our staff and facilities is unsustainable.

To ease this burden, PMGH calls for immediate investment in NCDPHA and Central PHA facilities. Establishing at least six labor beds each in Moresby North East, Moresby South, and Moresby North West. Togther with Motoreia 3 labor beds, up to 20 labor beds will significantly reduce congestion at PMGH.

We are rallying support to raise funds for 18 additional labor beds across NCDPHA facilities. Every mother deserves a safe, dignified place to welcome her child into the world. Together, we can provide that.

Following concerns raised by the PNG Nurses Association after 39 nurses on short contract were laid off at Port Moresby General Hospital, Chief Executive Officer, Dr. P**i Molumi said the hospital is working closely with the Department of Personnel Management to transition these nurses into permanent public service positions under the Alesco payroll system.

PMGH to Host Free Medical Checks for Media Personnel

Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) will host its inaugural free basic medical checks for media personnel on 29 May 2026, in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on 3 May.

The event will bring together journalists, media workers, healthcare staff, and representatives from the business community to celebrate press freedom and recognize the vital role the media plays in supporting the development of PMGH and Papua New Guinea.

During a recent visit to the hospital, Billy Paranos, Branch Manager of Ailan West Industries, announced the company’s donation of water supplies and fruit drinks for the event. He further confirmed that the company will return later this week to provide additional donations to the Children’s Ward and other hospital wards.

> “We are planning to attend the main event on May 29,” Mr. Paranos said. “We will come back to present our products and also provide sponsorship support during the event.”

Mr. Paranos emphasized that Ailan West Industries remains committed to supporting community and healthcare initiatives.

The event is expected to strengthen cooperation between the hospital, the media, and the business community, while also encouraging regular health checks among media personnel.

PMGH Working with DPM to Secure Permanent Positions for Nurses

Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) Chief Executive Officer, Dr. P**i Molumi, has announced that the hospital is working closely with the Department of Personnel Management (DPM) to transition nurses into permanent public service positions under the Alesco payroll system.

Dr. Molumi confirmed that the Government has allocated adequate Personnel Emoluments funding in the 2026 budget to support this initiative. As part of the process, the affected 39 nurses currently employed on short-term contracts (STC) will be absorbed into the Alesco system.

PMGH is collaborating with DPM to ensure all compliance requirements are met and that the transition process is fast-tracked.

> “The hospital is seriously looking into this matter and is working closely with DPM to ensure these nurses are transitioned into permanent employment positions under the public service payroll system,” Dr. Molumi said.

This move reflects PMGH’s commitment to strengthening its workforce and ensuring stability for nurses who play a vital role in delivering quality healthcare services to the people of Papua New Guinea.

Port Moresby General Hospital Encourages Tetanus Immunization for Women and Girls

Port Moresby General Hospital is encouraging all girls and women between the ages of 15 and 44 to receive tetanus immunization to prevent tetanus-related deaths.
Following the launch of the Tetanus Immunization Campaign on 28 April 2026, PMGH has commenced vaccinations at designated sites within the hospital. Vaccination is currently being conducted at the waiting area lawn in front of Ward Nine (Obstetrics and Gynecology) and at the HR Lawn.
“All girls and women are encouraged to receive the first dose of the tetanus vaccine between 28 April and 18 May during the first round of the campaign.
The second dose will be administered one month later during the second round of the campaign, and the third dose will follow six months later during the third round.”
Women and girls aged 15–44 are strongly encouraged to receive the tetanus vaccine, particularly in countries with ongoing maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination efforts such as Papua New Guinea.
The purpose of the vaccination is to protect women from tetanus and, importantly, to pass immunity to newborns, thereby preventing neonatal tetanus.
“All girls and women of childbearing age (15–44), including students, farmers, workers, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, are eligible.
The vaccine is provided free of charge, often through schools, community outreach, or mobile health teams. While a single dose provides some protection, completing the full series (up to five doses) is recommended to ensure long-term, possibly lifelong, protection. The tetanus vaccine is safe and effective.”
The World Health Organization continues to advocate for high tetanus immunization coverage among women of childbearing age to eliminate tetanus-related deaths worldwide.

PMGH and Vanuatu Strengthen Referral Pathways for Cancer and Specialized Care

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) yesterday welcomed the Hon. John Stilltaviqehi, Minister for Health of Vanuatu, along with his health delegation, to explore opportunities for strengthening referral pathways for cancer and other specialized medical services.

The collaboration seeks to support Vanuatu in building capacity for specialized health care, enhance workforce training through exchange programs, and establish referral mechanisms for patients to access advanced medical services at PMGH.
