PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT: TB CASES SURGING IN METRO MANILA

The Department of Health (DOH) has raised concern over a sharp rise in Tuberculosis (TB) cases—especially in Metro Manila—with over 101,807 cases recorded as of February 16, 2026.

DOH Undersecretary Albert Domingo warns that TB is airborne, meaning it spreads through tiny droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even talks—making it highly contagious, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces.

⸻

Key Updates (March 2026)

• NCR hotspot: Over 100,000 cases recorded in just the first 6 weeks of 2026
• Airborne spread: TB bacteria can stay in the air longer than many viruses in enclosed areas
• Post-pandemic effect: Lockdowns may have increased exposure indoors
• High global burden: PH accounts for ~6.8% of global TB cases
• Mass screening goal: DOH + World Health Organization targeting 12 million Filipinos for screening by end of 2026

⸻

⚠️ Watch for Symptoms

If you or someone you know has:
• Cough lasting 2 weeks or more
• Chest pain or coughing up blood
• Weight loss, fever, or night sweats

- Get checked immediately at your nearest health center

⸻

💊 Good News: TB is CURABLE

✔️ Treatment is FREE under the National TB Program & PhilHealth
✔️ Standard treatment lasts 4–6 months
✔️ Completing medication is critical to avoid drug-resistant TB

⸻

🛑 Simple Prevention Tips

• Wear a mask in crowded indoor spaces
• Improve ventilation (open windows, use fans)
• Cover your mouth when coughing/sneezing
• Seek early testing if symptomatic

⸻

📌 Why This Matters

TB is often overlooked, but it remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases in the Philippines. Early detection and treatment don’t just save lives—they help stop the spread.
