Red Cross brings rainwater tanks to Sagay schools, discusses farm mechanization support

The Philippine Red Cross-Bacolod Chapter has begun providing rainwater catchment tanks to identified schools in Sagay City while also exploring possible support for local farmers through the Pandayan ng Bayan project.

A Red Cross team visited Sagay on Sept. 30 to distribute the water tanks and paid a courtesy call on Mayor Leo Rafael “Bebo” M. Cueva at the City Mayor’s Office.

Philippine Red Cross Volunteer Focal Person Dan Gabriel Moraca said the initial distribution forms part of a continuing initiative that may later be expanded to other schools in the city.

During the meeting, the team also discussed with Cueva and City Administrator Engr. Rodnel de los Reyes the Pandayan ng Bayan Project, an initiative promoting rural industrialization and community-based agricultural mechanization.

The project aims to help farmer organizations locally fabricate, modify, and repair agricultural implements and machinery, reducing dependence on outside repair services and improving access to farm equipment support.

The concept originated in Negros Occidental through the involvement of Central Philippines State University, RU Foundry and Machine Shop Corporation, and the Camingawan Tagukon Farmers’ Association.

It has also received support from the Department of Science and Technology Region VI through the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology program.

By 2024, equipment had already been provided to farmer organizations in Negros Occidental, including groups in Sagay and Sipalay, with technical training from RU Foundry.

Cueva said the proposal will be referred to the City Agriculture Office for assessment and to determine how Sagay farmers may benefit from or participate in the initiative.

Also present during the visit were Ronald Margen, operations manager of RU Foundry, and Philippine Red Cross Chapter Administrator Rita Benita Mirasol.*
