Case Spotlight: Successful Management of Secondary Spontaneous Pneumothorax

📍 Before and After Chest Tube Thoracostomy (CTT)

A patient presented with a large right-sided pneumothorax (collapsed lung) occurring on a background of chronic lung disease. The initial chest X-ray showed significant collapse of the right lung due to air accumulation within the pleural cavity.

Following prompt chest tube thoracostomy, a repeat chest X-ray demonstrated substantial re-expansion of the lung and marked improvement in the pneumothorax.

What is a Pneumothorax?
A pneumothorax occurs when air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall, causing the lung to partially or completely collapse.

Symptoms may include:
✔ Sudden chest pain
✔ Shortness of breath
✔ Rapid breathing
✔ Decreased oxygen levels

Prompt diagnosis and intervention can:

✅ Allow the lung to re-expand
✅ Prevent life-threatening complications
