I was involved in providing vision rehabilitation for children with visual impairments.
10 years later…
Today, in collaboration with Philippine Red Cross, Silay City, the training of around 50 Volunteer Health Workers was concluded to help identify & refer to clinical optometrists common eye problems of 6-80 yo persons who might have common eye diseases that will need immediate attention, refractive errors, crossed eye, double vision & lazy eye.

This 8 yo patient is visually impaired!
And the mother observed her poor vision when she was 6 yo already. Do you know why?

She was born with very high myopia (nearsightedness) and cycloplegic refraction revealed the prescription of
RE -11.25-2.25 X170 20/120 from 10/225
LE -1.50-2.75 X 10. 20/50 from 20/63-2

All the while she was using her left eye and that is the reason why the mother noticed it very late.

As her optometrist, I have to guide her parents on other aspects of LOW VISION CARE & teach this child how to visuallyfunction well & monitor the changes that will occur in her eyes applying advanced technology.

Clinical Refraction is the foundation in the practice of Optometry. But the recent developments in eye health have prompted us to be highly skilled in our chosen specialty & to learn more about eye diseases that can be prevented to avoid expensive medications & surgeries.

Myopia progression can lead to visual impairments.
I started prescribing several types of spectacle lenses using H.A.L.T. technology, on children ages 4 to 14 yo. after following the protocols of pediatric eye examinations and ruling out binocular vision problems. To achieve success, the child with the parents should comply with other recommendations and close monitoring is advised.

Optometry has indeed advanced. It no longer aims to provide clear vision but truly deliver comprehensive eye examinations, correct & early diagnoses, preventive care & hybrid healthcare systems.
