Emergency Protocol for Hemodialysis Patients During Fire and Earthquake
🔥 FIRE EMERGENCY DURING DIALYSIS
If Fire Alarm Activates:
1. Stay calm and assess the situation.
2. Stop ultrafiltration (UF) if time permits.
3. Return blood safely if there is enough time and the patient is stable.
4. If immediate evacuation is required:
Clamp arterial and venous bloodlines.
Disconnect patient according to unit emergency protocol.
Apply sterile dressings to access sites.
5. Turn off dialysis machines if safe to do so.
6. Assist ambulatory patients to the nearest exit.
7. Use wheelchairs or stretchers for non-ambulatory patients.
8. Evacuate to the designated assembly area.
9. Perform patient headcount and documentation.
Priority of Evacuation:
1. Patients not yet connected to dialysis.
2. Stable patients on dialysis.
3. Patients requiring assistance.
4. Critically ill or unstable patients.
Remember:
RACE
R – Rescue
A – Alarm
C – Contain
E – Extinguish/Evacuate

🌎 EARTHQUAKE EMERGENCY DURING DIALYSIS
During Shaking:
1. Do not disconnect the patient immediately.
2. Instruct patients to remain seated or reclined.
3. Lock dialysis chair wheels.
4. Protect the patient's head and access arm.
5. Stay away from windows, glass panels, and falling objects.
6. Staff should follow:
DROP
COVER
HOLD ON
After Shaking Stops:
1. Assess patient condition and unit safety.
2. Check for:
Needle dislodgement
Bloodline rupture
Water leaks
Electrical hazards
3. If evacuation is necessary:
Stop blood pump.
Clamp bloodlines.
Return blood if possible.
Disconnect safely.
4. Evacuate patients to an open safe area away from buildings, power lines, and glass structures.
5. Reassess all patients and document events.
FocusSym Special Considerations:
Monitor for bleeding from AV fistula/graft sites.
Watch for hypotension, anxiety, and injuries.
Prepare emergency medications and first aid equipment.
Follow facility disaster and incident command protocols.
Quick Reminder for Dialysis Staff
🔥 Fire = "Evacuate Fast"
Rescue → Alarm → Contain → Evacuate
🌎 Earthquake = "Protect First"
Drop → Cover → Hold On
Disconnect only after shaking stops and when safe.
Goal: Protect life first, dialysis treatment second. Patient and staff safety always take priority during any disaster.
