In support of National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, the Batac District Jail, in collaboration with the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC), conducted a Breastfeeding Awareness Information Drive for the facility’s personnel and Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) on August 24, 2026.

The activity was facilitated by Dr. Rocamia R. Fermin, Chair of the Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Committee Human Milk Bank and Breastfeeding Program, and Ms. Princess Syra U. Ignacio.

The discussion covered Lactation in the Workplace, compliance with Executive Order No. 51 or the Milk Code, proper breastfeeding practices, situations when breastfeeding may not be recommended, and proper infant feeding and care.

A total of 38 participants attended the activity, which provided information on breastfeeding practices, workplace lactation, and appropriate infant feeding and care, including considerations for breastfeeding mothers who are working or deprived of liberty.

Happening Now | Wellness Caravan in Nueva Era

The Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center brings preventive and promotive health services closer to the people of Nueva Era through its Wellness Caravan, aiming to serve around 500 residents.

The caravan offers a range of services, including health education, medical consultation, dental services, social service assistance, diet counseling, medicines, acupuncture, detoxification, and other wellness services. Screening services also include Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA), breast cancer screening and FIT/FOBT for colorectal cancer screening.

This is the 3rd leg of the Wellness Caravan, an initiative of Dr. Maria Lourdes K. Otayza. Previous caravans were conducted in Dumalneg and Carasi.

The activity is attended by Honorable Mayor Atty. Aldrin Garvida; Vice Mayor Caroline Arzadon Garvida, Dr. Jose B. Orosa III, Chief of Medical Professional Staff; Dr. Kasmere Degollado, Municipal Health Officer of Nueva Era and MMMHMC staff.

The Wellness Caravan continues to expand its reach, with the next leg set to bring essential health services to Ilocos Sur this September.

𝐈𝐏𝐂 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐞: 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐳 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭

The Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Unit of Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMHMC) held the “IPC Battlezone: Beyond the Usual Quiz” on August 18, 2026, at the 5th Floor Function Hall. The activity brought together eight groups of affiliated hospital interns who competed in the Quiz Bee.

A Picture Book Contest was also held, featuring hand hygiene as its central theme. Radiologic Technology students from Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) used storytelling and visuals to share the simple but powerful message that clean hands help stop the spread of infection.

The champion, “Ang Misteryong Bakas,” highlighted the unseen microorganisms that can be carried by contaminated hands, while “Kain-Kamay, Hugas-Kamay,” which placed second, reminded everyone of the importance of handwashing, especially before eating.

More than a competition, the activities showed that IPC can be learned and shared in creative ways, reinforcing the key message: clean hands protect everyone.
