Deep breathing is more than a relaxation technique…it’s evidence-based.

Research shows that slow, diaphragmatic breathing can reduce stress and anxiety, activate the body’s relaxation response, improve emotional regulation, and enhance overall well-being.

Research in psychology suggests that employees who regulate their emotions are more likely to make thoughtful decisions, communicate with clarity, navigate conflict constructively, and build trusting relationships within their teams. Conversely, impulsive or emotionally reactive leadership can increase stress, reduce trust, and discourage open communication.

James Gross’ Process Model of Emotion Regulation emphasizes that the ability to recognize and manage emotions influences how we think, behave, and relate to others.

In organizational settings, Amy Edmondson’s work on psychological safety demonstrates that people perform better when they feel safe to express ideas, ask questions, and admit mistakes without fear of embarrassment or punishment.

Emotional intelligence research by Daniel Goleman likewise identifies self-regulation as a key competency of effective leadership.

Emotion regulation does not mean suppressing emotions or pretending everything is fine.

It means pausing before reacting, responding with intention, and considering how our emotions influence those around us.

Our emotional responses do more than reflect who we are—they shape the culture we create.

Calm is contagious. So are respect, empathy, and trust.
