In 1997, Administrative Order 1-B or the “Establishment of a Women and Children Protection Unit in All Department of Health (DOH) Hospitals” was promulgated in response to the increasing number of women and children who consult due to violence, rape, incest, and other related cases. In 2002, the Women and Child Protection Unit of the Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center was e

stablished, spearheaded by Dr. Cynthia P. Presently the WCPU team is headed by Dr. Josephine Victoria V. Dr. Daniel and Dr. Romero trained as Child Protection Specialist at the CPU-UP Manila College of Medicine PGH. Other members of the team who underwent training on Child Protection at Child Protection Network Foundation at the CPU-UP Manila are as follows: Dr. Marilyn M. Toledo (Pediatrician), August Joy G. Dela Cruz (Medical Social Worker) and Rosie P. To further enhance the capability of the WCPU to handle abused women and children, the staff members attended training seminars like the Training of Trainors (TOT)on Recognizing, Recording, Reporting and Referring (4 Rs) of Women Children Abuse Cases; and Annual conventions like Ako Para sa Bata – The International Conference. To be able to address the needs of abused patients holistically, the following persons are presently training on Trauma –Informed Psychotherapy: Frederick Dennis M. Mercado (Psychologist), Dr. Leah-Mel Dennesa I. Bourbon (Obstetrician) and Cherry Ann G. Buesil (Medical Social Worker). Dr. Claire Liz I. Bombase, a pediatric and adolescent gynecologist is the recent member of the WCPU team and is the Ob-Gyne WCPU Coordinator.

Nakikiisa ang Philippine Commission on Women sa kampanya laban sa trafficking in persons dahil ang bawat tao ay hindi dapat ituring na laruan, bawat tao ay may karapatang dapat maprotektahan.

Ngayong Disyembre 2021, pinangungunahan ng -Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) ang laban kaugnay ng International Day Against Trafficking in Persons, na may temang Modern-day slavery during the New Normal: Challenges, Priorities, and Perspectives".
