Stimming is a natural way many people regulate emotions, manage stress, cope with sensory overload, or feel calm and safe. It can look different for every person - rocking, pacing, hand movements, repeating sounds or words, humming, or focusing on certain textures, sounds, or lights.

Stimming is not something that automatically needs to be stopped or corrected. When it is safe, understanding and acceptance can help a person feel more regulated, supported, and emotionally balanced.

Supporting neurodivergent people means looking at what the behaviour is communicating and what need it is meeting. Compassion and understanding matter more than forcing someone to appear “normal”. 💛

What are some stimming behaviours people often misunderstand?

Sometimes what looks like “bad behaviour” is not bad behaviour at all.

A child refusing school, shouting, crying over small things, or shutting down is often not being difficult. They are overwhelmed. They feel unsafe. They do not have the words to explain what is happening inside them.

When adults respond with punishment or pressure, it can make things worse. Not because the child is stubborn, but because their brain is in a stress response. They are not choosing it. They are reacting.

Children do well when they can. When they cannot, it is a sign they need support, not discipline.

We need to stop asking “What is wrong with this child?” and start asking “What is this child trying to tell me?”

‘Heavy work’ (activities that push, pull, lift, or carry) is great for kids because it gives their bodies strong sensory input that helps them feel calm, organised, and focused.

In short:
• Improves focus & attention – helps kids settle and concentrate
• Calms the nervous system – reduces stress and overwhelm
• Builds body awareness – kids better understand where their body is in space
• Supports coordination & strength – develops muscles and motor skills
• Helps emotional regulation – useful for kids who are hyperactive or easily frustrated

That’s why things like carrying groceries, climbing, pushing a cart, or playing with resistance (like therapy putty) are often recommended!
